I've been there many times. Not a big town but plenty to do if you're an outdoorsman. Some good fishing for sure. IMO a nice "family" place where you might wanna raise a kid. There is a Marine Corps base there (Cherry Point) but it is not a typical base - It is one of the major AV8B Harrier bases so lots of officers live there (there aren't tons of enlisted guys running around getting rowdy)

If you want a town with more to do I recommend looking into Wilmington. Some nice beaches and good nightlife/young crowd in wilmington.

Went to Seagull for 10 years when I was a kid. Now have a condo at Topsail Island which is 30 min north of Wilmington. I like Wilmington better than New Bern.

I lived between Kinston and New Bern in 1999. Wasn't far from Morehead City (Atlantic Beach). Very nice area.

Great mixture of wealthy and extreme poverty. I love culture.

Really appreciate all the feedback. Our second boy is due in July and the family needs more space and outside time than Chicago is providing.
