This cabbie in Nice asked where I was from. I said Alabama. He said, "Oh you must love country music!" I said, "Yeah! You're French, you must love wine and jazz!" He said: "I love wine! I am not so big on jazz." My sarcasm didn't translate. That's a true story bro.

It is also a very cool story, bro

I lost track of the number of times I got asked if Texans got around on horseback all the time when I lived in Europe

Europe knows Tennessee but the common response no matter where I was was "Oh Jack Daniel's!" This was said with tons of excitement and even a little awe at the accomplishment. They indeed love our whiskey and with more passion than I expected. Given our history this is just fine with me.

I gotta agree!

The running joke at my house is that our biggest contributions as a state are Music, Moonshine, and Marijuana. Given the realities of our state, it's hard to argue otherwise. :

My only point is that Lincoln shouldn't be regarded as the patriot of civil rights as he is when he wouldn't have done anything regarding slavery until it became a useful war tactic, and being that he in fact was a racist who wanted to ship all the slaves back to Africa.

So no Flava flave, mike Tyson, or Obama???? Maybe they should've tried harder

When I'd say I was from Louisiana, pre Katrina, it was all about Gators and never wearing shoes and driving airboats to work. Post Katrina, it's more of the same plus "Is your home still flooded?"

I, of course, always answered "no" to any flooding questions, but I always ham it up to people from out of state layering crazy stories from my life with common Louisiana stereotypes and jokes from "The Waterboy".

Gawd... I think I'd punch someone if they made flooding jokes about Katrina. UT (the original one) took in a lot Tulane students and NOLA-area university students after Katrina and of course we had our share of families who fled the storm and aftermath. I already had a group of regular out of state students from NOLA and Gulf area and they were much better able to deal with what was happening than the transfer students who were traumatized, lost, and starting from behind at an entirely different university due to the storm-forced transfers. For a long time they walked around campus like WWI soldiers suffering shell-shock. I don't think that storm will ever be funny to me.

Waterboy jokes... now those are funny!
