I quickly browsed the article and didn't see a list or a link to a list.
Basically, AL and MS are lazy. That's about it.

Same can be said about Louisiana and New Orleans. What is there to really do outside of that city?
Get beat down at a gas station?

Southern cities ranked among laziest...
List is bullshite. Go to Detroit, Cleveland, Dearborn, Ypsi, Columbus, all of them some of the laziest cities in the world.

The old blue hairs are very busy on their three wheeled bicycles, bingo trips, golf ball searching excursions during their rounds and getting STDs.
They real busy.
They real busy.

Jackson is 80% minority and probably close to that in poverty. I would surmise that there is a correlation between poverty and the ability to go to health clubs and hike.
Also, they use snow skiing as a category and mountain biking. Won't find much of that in the South.
Go 10 minutes north to Madison and you'll find as physically active people there as there are in the U.S. There are 5K's every weekend and a biking culture that is evident every weekend along the Natchez Trace.

The race war can never happen. One side is too busy working and the other side is apparently too lazy to join the fray.

Name ten things to do in your city and I'll guarantee you Alabama can match that.
What city in Alabama can match New Orleans regarding:
1. NFL team
2. NBA team
3. Walk with beer in the streets
4. Mardi Gras
5. Free festivals all year
6. Voodoo/Jazz Fest
7. Food
8. Sugar Bowl
9. Super Bowls
10. Final Fours

So are we talking "cities" now, or the state in general? Everything you've listed at least once city in Alabama provides - or at least a variation of it, excluding the Super Bowl and Final Four of course. The OP claimed "there's nothing to do in Alabama above the coastal area", yet basically everything you listed you can see/do in some part of Alabama. Of course, there are no pro teams on the level of the Saints and Hornets, but there are plenty of minor league teams and at the end of the day, you're still leaving the house to watch the same sport being played, only in a smaller environment. Just as there's no Six Flags, but there's still a decent theme park that's just as satisfying as Six Flags would be.
I'll concede NO is greater than any city in Alabama before you begin to think I'm implying otherwise, but it's fricking balls to the wall retarded to think there's nothing to do in an entire state besides finger banging goats.
