Just bought my 12 yr old a gaming computer on Amazon and I need suggestions on what games would be good for her. She is about to turn thirteen. I just don't know the first thing about games. Haven't played a video game in 20 years.

She did mention that she isn't interested in red dead redemption or fortnight. I knew about those because of south park so I asked her about them. Can we download the games or do I need to order them and then install them when I get them. I would appreciate any suggestions. I paid too much for this desktop for her not to be playing games on it. Thanks in advance.

For most PC games anymore, theres no point in ordering a physical copy because companies have quite literally started selling boxes with cardboard discs with a download code for the game on them. Yeah, its odd, but companies are cheapskates and the download part of course leads into the next portion of my post.

As far as download/purchase locations you have quite a few options. Alotta video game companies are making their own online stores for computers so that you can purchase games, download, and play them all from one application (said store applications can be downloaded from your browser and installed on your computer). Sadly, this does mean that some games are exclusive to that company's store (for example most EA titles are exclusive to their store, Origin. This exclusivity includes their sports games like Madden)

Some of the major ones with the a variety of games (ie more than just their own) are:
- Steam - This is Valve's store front, the company that made Half Life back in the 90s

- Good Old Games (GOG) - This is CD Projekt Red's Store, the company that made the Witcher series

- Epic Games Store - This is Epic Games' store, the Company that made Unreal and Unreal Tournament many moons ago and recently made Fortnight

The most common one is probably Steam. Its been around for several years and I havent had any issues with it. Epic's store is newer and some have taken issue with the way it runs and claim it may data mine your computer (I cannot confirm this as I dont have it, you should be able to find additional info regarding this if you need to).
GOG does tend to focus more on old games rather than new but some people really like it.
Also, I believe Windows' Store has games as well but I have never used it and I dont know how wide their selection is.

Keep in mind that these stores aren't far off from a video streaming service. They have games that you may deem appropriate for your kid, and there will be some that you would most likely not deem appropriate (IE: "Adult games") so you will need to keep track of what game it is she buys beyond just the cost. Rating information is typically located somewhere on the page for the game within the store, as well as system requirements for the game (Some games demand alot of horsepower, so you should check and be sure your computer can handle it before purchasing, the store you bought it from as well as the company that made it should have the specs related to this on their website)

Games do go on sale on store fronts from time to time. Valve tends to have one for each season (Spring, Summer, Fall) and then one around Christmas time. Games wind up being much cheaper, just something to keep an eye on depending on how much the computer is gonna be used

As far as game recommendations, I dont really have any concerning new games. I like Quake Champions but, its an online multiplayer arena shooter and its a bit buggy to say the least (but what do you expect from a free to play game).

Anyway hope this helps. Im sure others can give you additional info, particularly regarding other stores and game recommendations.

Steam seems to be the pre-eminent PC platform for downloading games.

There are a ton on there for a variety of prices. It depends on the specs of the PC and what sort of games interest your daughter.

Here are a few games off the top of my head:
Minecraft (not on Steam) - classic open world building game

Terraria- sandbox game that is 2d-ish

Subnautica - survival game with a water theme; they're working on the sequel right now

House Flipper - it is what the title implies; you buy and fix up houses

Raft - survival game (on a raft)

Out of the Park Baseball 20 (there are several versions) - MLB simulation game; pretty in-depth

Human: Fall Flat - physics puzzle game where you explore to find out how to escape each level

Cities: Skylines - basically a newer Sim City

Hope this helps you find something that she might want to play.

EDIT: Also you might want to check out Humble Bundle. They have bundles of games and things for a lower price.

Covid-19 bundle
quote:

This special one-week bundle features $1,071 worth of games and ebooks for just $30. 100% of the proceeds from your bundle purchase go to support organizations responding to COVID-19. For example, delivering protective gear to safeguard healthcare workers and providing medical care to infected patients.

I think they have ones for different charities too (you might even be able to choose your preferred charity).

I did think of a game to recommend, maybe: Stardew Valley. Graphics arent anything amazing (its top down 2D game), but its basically a life/farm sim. You take over your relative's farm after they die and you give up the job you hate to move to the island on which its located and start a new life. You get to know the locals while working on the farm. Its basically a Harvest Moon clone. Its on steam.

Been a few years since I played it, but it wasnt bad. Or if your daughter just really wants a straight farming simulator, that exists too. Its literally called Farming Simulator and comes out i think yearly.

Indeed they do. You can purchase the " Atari Vault" video game pack on steam and it is in it.

Go nuts man

Chess! Can try another one of my favorites but it is an old game from the 90s. Axis and Allies. Have board game version of it. The Turned based one that I have no longer been in used I quit that about 15 years ago. I am more into board games. Many different ones but mostly men and teenagers would play board games now a days. Many good ones but got to go to a game store and ask around there. That is my best bet for your daughter.

Thanks to you and the poster below you for the info. Have any clue about a particular game you would suggest for a teen? She showed me a horror game she is wanting to play but it said you had to be 21 just to watch the trailer. I told her no. Don't remember the game but it's new.

If she is into horror games I can't help you, but there are some very highly rated games in that genre out there. Best thing to do is google the reviews for any game she wants to buy and check it out first.

No problem, happy to help.

As far as horror games, theres a quite a few available on the various stores. Some of the big ones are: Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Outlast, the Penumbra series, and Alien Isolation (its a sorta sequel to the movie, you play as Ripley's daughter). Now, I dont know what you deem as ok and not ok for her to play so you may want to take a look at these and decide for yourself.
Theres also dead by day light, an online multiplayer horror game in which you either play as a survivor or a slasher. Think Halloween, 1 person plays as Michael Meyers, the others play as the people tryin to escape. It is a bit graphic with people being impaled on hooks (ala Texas Chainsaw Massacre) so you may not want her playing this but again I dont know what you deem ok and not ok.

As far as other action oriented games a teen might like, Skyrim was and is still pretty popular. You make a character and try to save the country you are in from dragons. Theres plenty of side missions of course, as it is an RPG.
Theres also Prey, a sorta scifi thriller game in which aliens are attacking a space station owned by a corporation and you try to figure out what is going on throughout the game. Dont recall anything too violent or inappropriate in either of these but then neither are horror games

Also, forgot to mention in my initial post, with Steam at least they do offer demos for some games, so you can try them out before purchasing. If they offer a demo, it should be on the page for that specific game. There are also plenty of reviews for games on steam to help you and her decide if a game will be decent or not. These are also located on the same page as the one displaying information for the game you are looking at.

One more note, with these stores you can browse by category like on a streaming service for movies. So if you want horror games you should be able to browse those specifically. That may help make finding things a little easier since there are so many games on the stores now.

Dead by daylight is one she specifically asked for when I called her last night. Would you let your 13 yr old daughter play this?

No, I probably would not. Some of its a little violent

Still, if you want to see it for yourself before deciding, there should be plenty of footage on youtube for you to make a call. Heres a 6 minute review of it, whole video is of game play (with shots from survivor and killer's perspectives) so you can get an idea of how much violence/gore there is: LINK

It's not bad. Don't be a Tipper Gore. She's 13, not 8. She probably sees scarier/ more violent stuff on Netflix regularly.

If she's capable of handling a PG-13 horror or slasher movie then she's plenty capable of handling this game

Eh I'd say R not PG-13. Little too much blood.
Still, its borderline too far imo. Its not as graphic as some games but still might be too much. But then by 13 I had seen numerous slasher movies (Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, F13th etc) so its really just up to parent's judgement if its ok or not. Kids will of course say "I can play/watch something thats violent? Yes!" regardless of what it is

And Im not bein Tipper Gore and sayin we need to ban video games and music
