wanna get an 8 year old kid a keyboard. nothing too expensive. main thing is i'd like for her to loop, record etc and be able to transfer to a cpu to save or whatever to listen to on the cpu. What type of connection or whatever should i be looking for to transfer what she makes. seems like i've heard some say midi

All depends on your price range.
I have a few Roland’s and Yamaha’s.
Definitely partial to Roland’s with weighted keys as I trained on Piano. The light keys are a lot easier for them to play at a young age but doesn’t strengthen their fingers like weighted does. Most every keyboard $300 will allow for looping and recording and usually comes with some fun sound effects and all. I would go talk to the guys at the music store where you live and ask for a few models, but like I said, can’t go wrong with Roland.

Midi might be a little confusing for an 8 year old.
If there’s an onboard recorder with multiple tracks, that could enhance her enjoyment. That looks more like a tape recorder controls so that you can record drums, bass, keys, etc on different tracks. It’s recording Midi and you can dump it to computer or a card. But it won’t be as confusing to her (probably) as trying to configure the Midi on the computer.
Roland came out with an intriguing “intro” model, Go: keys. It’s a little pricey for a strictly intro keyboard ($300). But they make great stuff and it probably sounds pretty cool right out of the box.
Depending on how much you want to surprise her, maybe take her to a Musicians Friend and let her dink around with some. If you want to spread out payments, zzounds.com lets you buy and spread the payments out for almost no charge.
I’ve also bought two or three boards used on EBay (or various sites like Caruso music or reverb and I’ve used zzounds to buy DJ year without the wife noticing the budget change). Keyboards from 10 years ago are amazing and dirt cheap (comparatively). A Yamaha SY 55 is like $250 used and has a 8 track onboard sequencer. Guitar Center will often have used boards sitting there to sell as well.
Best advice is to try before you buy. And the jockeys in a Guitar Center (or similar store) can be helpful in narrowing down your choices if you give them enough info.
Also, everyone come see our INXS tribute band in St. Louis on the 30th.

Maudio makes decent controllers. Plenty of free to cheap emulators and recording suites.
Any keyboard will be obsolete in 3 years.
