I feel ya! I have had people turn around in a crowd after I've said something and say that they knew that was me. Proud to be a good ol' southern boy!

I'd say that 90% of the people in southern Birmingham lack an accent, at least that was the case at my high school. It's heavier elsewhere but it's certainly starting to lose itself

I've noticed that people from the larger cities like Birmingham, Atlanta, Columbia, Nashville, Huntsville, ect. lack a "traditional" or stereotypical southern accent. I always preferred the other types of accent, the "country" or "redneck" accent.

Also even though I'm not originally from the south, after spending almost 14 years here, I feel like I got the accent down pact.

My accent is a mix of Cajun, NOLA Yat, and South Mississippi peckerwood, I get WTF responses from all three respective groups when I speak.

Fricking this. I work with several people from up north or out west, and have been told several times by several different people (mostly women) that they love my accent. I have a thick southern dialect, but it's not Larry The Cable Guy.

I have a buddy who's working in Maine now and the ladies absolutely love him -- said he gets mentions of the way he talks (in a good way) all the time.

This. Though she is hotter than a firecracker, her accent was turrible. Irritating to those who know what someone from Memphis/Mississippi area sounds like.

Yep. I have no end of trouble understanding why Hollywood can never get someone to do a proper southern accent for the specific area of the country they're setting the movie in.

The lone exception is Jim Parsons' accent when playing Sheldon Cooper, a Texan, on The Big Bang Theory, which doesn't really count because Parsons is from Texas.
