If you're young and w/o kids, listen to everyone that said mid town. Collierville & Germantown are nice, but (I wasn't a fan of Collierville, though)you will be bored there and driving into town anytime you want to go out to a bar, etc..

I lived in the 'burbs while in Memphis and couldn't stand it.

Just stay away from Getwell. (I'm assuming it's the same as it was back when I was there)

Bragging About Memphis (really, please read this)

Either Collierville or Germantown to be exact. Not the hood by any means.

I live out in Collierville myself. Though I will say that Collierville and Germantown are you're typical suburbs and more geared to home owners, but there are a few places you could stay.

Your nicer apartments IMO are further out west towards east Memphis to Mid town and there are some really nice ones downtown and out on the river at Harbor Town, which contrary to popular belief are nice places to live.

If I may ask why are you moving, what kinda work will you be doing?

Some of our friends live in the reserve too. We tried to sell our house in Arlington to move over that way, but the market is still too soft where we are. Maybe next year though, since we are getting an exit at mile marker 29 on I40, which will make our neighborhood the easiest to get to in Fayette co.

Live in mid or downtown.

If you are working in Germantown that's fine with the commute because you will always be going the opposite direction of the heavy traffic.

This. Keep in mind Collierville and Germantown don't have bars. The closest ones are in Cordova. Midtown and downtown have a lot more for entertainment.

Negative I live in C'ville and I still drive to Midtown because the are closer/easier/faster to get to IMO.

Harbor Town

Close to downtown and some fun stuff, yet safe. It's like a miniature community with its own grocery store/sandwich shop and several restaurants--most notably, Paulette's. A lot of UT Med/grad students and other young professional types.

I live in a private subdivision off of Byhalia just before you get to the State Line the perfect distance between Downtown Memphis, Oxford, & Pickwick which I frequent all three regularly.

This, along with schools and extracurricular activities for the kids is why we want to be over there. Not having to drive almost the entire length of 196 would cut 25 minutes off the trips to Corinth, Pickwick, and Oxford.

I'm right next to 302 and it takes me 5-10 minutes to get to 72 and it takes me about 45-50 minutes to make it to Oxford.

Where are you working? In midtown, Germantown/collierville area, or downtown? If you live within the city of Memphis downtown is the safest area because of the heavy police presence and the recent influx of business and professionals to the city. Midtown has a lot of nice parts as well but you can go two blocks over and be in the hood. All of Memphis is like that though. Downtown and midtown both have nice bar districts, and I prefer midtown (10 min drive from downtown). If you are working in the collierville/ Germantown are (where I grew up as a young kid) your commute in the morning won't be bad because everyone will be going the opposite direction. If you have kids and are sending them to public schools I would STRONGLY suggest you move to Germantown or collierville. If you live within the city limits private school is a must. Also are you planning on buying or renting? If you buy in the city of Memphis you will pay Shelby county and city of Memphis property taxes whereas if you live in Germantown, collierville, barlett (all in the county but not part of Memphis) you will only pay county property taxes and your kids will be in their own school districts not memphis city schools. I suggest you get a carry permit as well as Memphis can get very seedy and dangerous in a hurry.

A few good bars in midtown

- Celtic crossing (best bar in Memphis IMO, Irish pub)
- young ave deli (hipsterish crowd but great food and a frickton of beers on tap)
- local midtown (gastropub) lots of good food and beers
- the Dublin house (Irish pub) it's fun if you bring a group with you
- alchamey (upscale restaurant) more expensive but loaded with cougars if that's your thing

A few good bars downtown

- bardog, great food and a fun place to drink (Monroe ave)
- local downtown (gastropub) same as the midtown location just smaller
- the blind bear (speakeasy) (main street) 20's themed bar with great drinks always has a good crowd and always has decent live music. Follow them on twitter for the door password or you will pay a cover.
- the silly goose (clubish) this is a bar but they have dancing and a lot of foreigners go there and is a little more expensive. Great place to meet a lot of girls and there is a $10 cover for guys and a $5 cover for girls (it keeps the riff-raff out)

Of course there is beale street as well but I only ever go to silks (huge Irish pub with a massive patio) and 152 (the devils vagina) which is a night club that stays open until you leave ONLY GO TO THE 3RD FLOOR. I hate 152 but I always find myself there

Then there is Raifords which is a 70's themed disco. It is over the top, crowded and loud but godamn is it fun. Where else can you drink 40's and dance on a light up floor to disco?

Last call in Memphis is usually around 2:30 am and bars close at 3 (except 152).

Any other questions just ask here and ill answer as best as I can. Hope this helps. Welcome to the 901

FWIW I live downtown in south bluffs which is on the south end of downtown. Harbor town has a lot of problems namely it is infested with termites and the physical island is sinking. When you leave harbor town you are also on the border if north memphis which is hood as frick. Look elsewhere from harbor town too many problems with the buildings over there

I'd likely be working in Germantown. But I definitely want to live where the action is. Thanks for the post that is super informative.

I should consider leaning towards the south end Huh?

Also, I'm 25, will be living with the SO, no kids and looking to rent then possibly buy later on.

If you live downtown yes I would consider south bluffs or any of the apartments or condos not on harbor town. I'm a homeowner in south bluffs and almost bought on harbor town till I had the house inspected. Infested top to bottom with termites. Turns out a lot of the homes and buildings have the same problems. I'm also your age so either downtown or midtown will be fine. Midtown or downtown put you between 20-30 min to Germantown in the mornings. Downtown rent averages about $800 and up

Thanks for the help and I'll likely be asking more questions in the coming months if that's ok.
