In the Northern Hemisphere, the north face of a mountain is generally the coldest, iciest, and most challenging route to climb.

Glaciers encroaching from the north are a very effective tool for carving steep, shear faces.

Steep slopes to the south receive more sunlight and are slowly massaged by the freeze and thaw cycle to become less and less extreme.

So while a southern face is more likely to be slowly broken down and settle into a gentler slope, a northern face is more often carved away by glaciation and left extreme.

As such, The North Face logo represents the more formidible northern side of Half Dome, a distinct rock formation in Yosemite National Park.
