Richmond, even with its pc make over, is as old south as is gets.

I’m chickening out here, but don’t care
Four way tie for 1st
1 Mississippi
1 Alabama
1 Georgia
1 South Carolina
5 Louisiana- because they are Louisiana first, then Southern
Then about 3 in the 50% Southern/50% something else category
6 Tennessee
6 Florida
6 Arkansas
9 Kentucky- only some residents will claim to be Southern
10 Texas- most don’t claim southern at all, they claim Texas first, much more so than Louisiana.
11 Missouri- would have to be informed that they are technically southern.

We aren't southern. Stop trying to call us southern. We helped kick the south's arse and would just as soon y'all stop trying to recruit us from the winning team to the losing team. Thank you.

We aren't southern.
Y’all were a slave state at the start of the war, therefore, “southern”.

I was being tongue in cheek.
This topic comes up about 193847983753948 times every offseason. Bottom line is we are a mutt. The southern part probably shares some traits that are traditionally considered to be southern. The northern part of the state, not so much. And the entire middle of the state is just midwestern.
Personally I don't identify as southern, northern, midwestern or whatever, mostly because I don't stop to think about it until someone brings it up.

Western Arkansas isn't "South" enough to make up for how far West it is. Fort Smith and everything around it is the Old West culturally. Cowboy shite, cattle ranches, "wild west" heritage, and chicken farms.
East of Little Rock, the Arkansas Delta is definitely the Deep South.

Do ya think that it holds any meaning that when I think of Western Arkansas, I think of growth and success. I think of east of Little Rock and I think of poor, dirty, backwards. Of course, my only experience with eastern Arkansas is driving through Blytheville down to West Memphis as I head down 55. My only experience with western Arkansas is going to visit Arky with my son and there wasn't shite in southwestern Missouri but once you cross into Arkansas it was incredibly developed. That may very well warp my perception.

Well, sure but all of Western Arkansas isn't NWA. Fort Smith is pretty blah. Demographically, it's much more like Oklahoma or NWA than it is like Mississippi.
The biggest long-term cultural difference is that the hilly areas (and the Ouachitas are "mountains" in every sense that the Apps are) weren't very developed or suited to plantation culture back when "Southern Culture" was becoming a thing. And the "hilly areas" make up half of the state.
It was very much "the frontier" compared to eastern Arkansas, which at the time was wealthy and developed. Now, the opposite is true.
Eastern Arkansas is mostly poor, full of row crops, duck hunting, mosquitoes and flat, timbered flood plains. The majority of Arkansans live west of LR. The "rural" aspects of Western Arkansas are more cowboy than "old South". The first time I ever had grits was at a Cracker Barrel.

3. Louisiana
4. Georgia
5. South Carolina
6. Tennessee
7. Arkansas
8. Kentucky
9. Florida
10. Texas
11. Missouri
Having grown up in Arkansas, it's a hard state to catagorize...
The delta is definitely Southern. The mountain regions (about 1/3 of the state) are not. A good part of western Arkansas might as well be Oklahoma. South Arkansas, north Louisiana and NE Texas have a lot in common.
I'm sure people from other states can divide theirs up similarly.

Yeah, haven't been outside of NWA. The only thing I know about Fort Smith is some gal in college.
Knew ya had the mountains, not unlike southern Missouri. Hillbilly country there and I say that with my dad's side of the family coming from there.

There are some nice places in Western Arkansas. Ft. Smith is kind of bland but compared to Eastern Arkansas its a thriving boom town metropolis. Conway is a nice town.
Eastern Arkansas, and I live in that region now, quite frankly sucks. It is the land that prosperity forgot.
NW Arkansas is its only little demi-state. I expect if the Ozarkopolis continues to grow it will spill over into Oklahoma and Missouri.

Well you could pick shittier towns in Arkansas.
....well...
Nah, you pretty much nailed the worst towns in one trip. Two of the top 3 anyway.

MS, AL, GA, and SC are the most Southern.
Next you have TN, LA, and AR.
Then KY, followed by FL, TX, and lastly, MO.
