It's more than just a belief that God exists... That is a no-brainer. After crossing the sea of Gallilea, there were a group of learned men who came to Jesus and said smugly that they believe God exists and that they should be "OK" because of it. Jesus outright rebuked them by telling them "You believe that God exists? You do well (or, whoop-tee-doo). The devils and demons believe in the existence of God as well... And they tremble.". Jesus was getting at the point that a relationship goes beyond just believing something (or one, in this case) merely exists. In order to be saved, we must have that relationship with God. It starts with us confessing to ourselves and him we are a sinner and deserve hell. Then asking for his forgiveness and accepting and believing in his sacrifice on the cross, and that he rose from the grave, making him King in our hearts and minds. It is a miraculous transformation he conducts inside us when we submit to him and accept his love and free gift of sacrifice.

True.

How so, just because there's a god doesn't mean there's going to be an afterlife.

Electrochemical... for the record. The self is an illusion, though, you're right.

Conversely, even if there is no god (which is a rather loaded term with several different meanings), this does not negate an afterlife.
The fun thing about all of this is that we are arguing about it from a position of inherent ignorance. That's why I usually don't take these things very seriously.

Someone commented that the guy who wrote "row, row row your boat" might have been ahead of his time in another thread the other day.. I've always kinda felt the same way.

Dude we are not arguing theology here, we are discussing what atheists and agnostics believe happens when you die, I personally believe in eternal life but I'm neither atheist or agnostic so I stated what I believe no more no less.

Because the belief of "no one knows" encompasses many aspects of an agnostic's "belief" system.

As did I. Then I gave reasons to support my answer BC I knew it was gonna get blasted. I've had this discussion many times before on this board.

I would like to consider myself an apethetist, but others who label themselves that fall more along the lines of believing more likely that there is no God, which I feel otherwise.
I actually just try to not think about the issue at all for the most part. Just go to work and move along.

While we're sorta on topic, there is a parody Twitter account I follow named Nihilist Arby's that cracks me the frick up. Was thinking about starting a thread on it one day but figured most would take it the wrong way, because of how many pussies post here.
Highly recommend reading the dude's tweets though

Every religion has a form-fitted answer for any question about eternity pointing towards it's favor. The problem I have is both main Godly religions were created from a region of eternal turmoil, that are constantly grasping for hope.
I lived in an area of West Iraq that was on a live bitumen well that dates back and was used to build the walls of Babylon. Just as ONE example: We raided a house one night looking for a bombmaker, and the two breaching teams had ordinance sniffing dogs. We wore sterile uniforms without any insignia because of the nature of the mission. We were raiding unlabeled for the sole reason of seeing how it changed intel via electronic collection.
The next day the word on the street was Ninja like warriors with Lions raided an estate loking for a Muslim cleric.
People will believe anything, and nobody loves bullshite stories like the areas Christianity and Islam were derived from.

Considering God created the concept of time as we know it, he neither has to have an origin or creator. Pre-creation physics is something we can't know about. However, atheists are tied to physical law and the concepts of creation and origin. Therefore the biggest and most damning hole in the "logic" of atheism will always be trying to figure out where the first space dust came from....

The thing that gets me about the 3 large major religions is that they all believe in the same God and are fighting over who the messenger is, what they need to be asking themselves is did you get the message.
