I've always baked my skates. Well, since I was at the age where they were bakeable. Unless you're on the ice almost every day it takes forever to break them in. Most manufactures recommend it and it really is the best way to mold the skate to your foot.

Eta: unless you're paying $500 for skates, then what's the issue anyway?

A good blade has a tremendous effect on how hard you have to work. Try stopping on a dull blade or a rental vs a properly sharp blade and tell me it doesn't make a difference. Furthermore, if you've got weak ankles(which I don't, but I think tbird does from what he's said) you'll be shuffling the whole time instead of skating.


I've been on skates since I was 5. I've played roller all my life and ice for a few years.

Braces on both ankles is how I play basketball already.
