why would he win more moderates than trump if he's not a moderate?
Biden was a big supporter of Obamacare, not a popular piece of legislation.

Trump got the bust of Winston Churchill back from the UK and will display it in the White House again. Obama, being the weird guy that he is, shipped it back to the UK when he became president.

In a normal year, easily. I don't know about this election. There was a huge anti-establishment movement that fueled Bernie and Trump. Introducing Biden would have probably led to HRC and Joe splitting the votes and Bernie getting the nomination, leading to the same result you got anyhow - President Trump.
Timing and mood of the nation really are a major part of winning an election and this simply was not the year for establishment candidates.
