From what I understand, everyone is fearing a slippery slope. They skip from extremely slack gun control, to the government busting into your house to steal guns leaving only bad guys with guns. Therefor even suggesting limitations to different parts of who and what people can obtain is "against the 2nd amendment".

I completely understand the idea of keeping an eye on government control. They have really overstepped and fricked shite up in the past, but on the same hand I believe something has to buckle, we have a serious problem and the whole "a good guy with a gun stopping a bad guy with a gun" is a pipedream and will never be a reality. This isn't the wild west.

They already have that ability to a certain extent.

I know they happen, but they are by far the exception, not the rule.

Umm, it's a reality right now. It's just an unreported reality by the liberal media so your dumbass doesn't know about it.

I am genuinely curious what is so bad about expanding background checks?

What is so bad about tracing a gun back to a seller?

What is so bad about at least attempting to check if someone has a history of mental health issues?

Folks are acting as though he is trampling on the Constitution. I'm no Obama advocate, but it's not as though the man is advocating kicking in doors and taking away your guns like so many like to exaggerate.

Knowing who has them makes that reality one step closer. Why should any free citizen be subjected to infringements of their rights because the Govt fails to protect them. Give me freedom. I would rather not let Govt be my master.

Rhetoric at best.

there is no way without essentially issuing martial law that one could round up all of the guns in this country

stop fear mongering. The media does that enough from the other side of the table.

There are some things about gun purchases that could be changed, but there is a lot about gun ownership that is none of the government's business.

Im sure the folks in New York, including a retired police officer feel like you do, after their firearms were taken due to the SAFE act. They had to sue to get them back after they were wrongfully taken. Pay attention. Its not fearmongering, its reality. If there is ignorance, its on your part and those pushing for MORE gun control.

Completely separate issue. I'm a supporter of the second amendment, but I also don't see the harm in expanding the criteria in background checks.

I completely agree. I am a gun owner myself. But I have no problem with passing a more thorough background check.

My point is that Obama is not trying to take away anyone's guns. He's just wanting to make it harder to get one, to weed out those who want them for the wrong reasons. I've no idea if this will save lives, but I'm fine with giving it a whirl if it's for the greater good. I can answer a few more questions to prove I'm sane.

Anyone that really believes this would eventually lead to the ATF kicking in your door over a .30-06 that you use to hunt needs to unsubscribe from the NRA email list.

What are you talking about? The SAFE Act is a completely separate issue. It has nothing to do with what Obama is going to address in a few days.

Let's also not forget that over 60% of New Yorkers support the SAFE Act. I sure as shite don't. But this is not the same conversation anyways.

This. 100% this.

It is almost the year 2016. The government is not so afraid of the hand guns and rifles you have in your house that they would launch a massive operation to kick in the doors of every gun owner to confiscate them. If they ever want to subject the people to tyranny, they have robot planes that carry small missiles, your guns won't be able to do anything about it.

There is no talking to some people about this stuff. Fox news and talk radio has convinced so many people to completely shut down rational discussion or compromise for certain buzzwords. Islam, gun control, climate change, etc. Don't get me wrong the left does the same shite but hasn't worked their viewers into a panic frenzy like the right has done. The moment you say "well maybe we could at least look into some limits put on buying and selling guns" a lot of people go absolutely ballistic shouting 2nd amendment stuff and "obama is a communist".

I truly believe on this one issue the right has made a complete straw man in what the Obama administration is trying to do about guns. Each time there's a shooting someone jumps on the news saying "And of course Obama is using this tragedy to push his gun laws". Well no shite... What better time to try and talk about things that could happen in the future than when these shootings happen?

Good post. The far right media have used fear mongering as a tool to degrade what the administration is trying to do. It's fricking evil. I'll be the first to admit the left shoulders blame when it comes to plenty of debated topics, but this issue in particular is really a sight to see. They really come out of the wood works to proclaim their hatred for a man who is "tryna take away my guns!!"

It's baffling and is one of the major reasons I've walked away from the Republican party the last few years. I'm sick of the right trying to scare me into voting a certain way.

Knowing who is supposed to have each gun at least gives the cops a starting point when a crime is committed. If you have an unregistered gun, I am completely ok with them taking it from you.
