Dumb question, but in the 15 seconds after, "Hey, you're about to smack a truck," couldn't someone have jumped in that Humvee and threw it in reverse?

You can make adjustments, but only minor ones. "slip" is them telling him to do exactly that, but he can't even see the truck.
This kind of parachute is used for mass drops. You don't want even 64 dudes from the same plane to be steering all over the place and running into each other, let alone a battalion or brigade sized drop.

Slip means to pull one side of the parachute as hard as you can to get the chute to slide/turn a bit.
He couldn't see the truck because it was behind him. Wearing all the gear, you can't turn your head normally. If he was jumping with nothing but a t-shirt, he still wouldn't have been able to see it.

Jumper failed to slip away from an obstacle on the ground. If I was offering an opinion, he was trying to land near a parachute turn in point. Ended up landing on the vehicles for the drop zone safety officer (DZSO). Lucky he was not badly hurt.
ETA: He was jumping a T-11 (a type of military parachute) CE (combat equipment) which he had already lowered. If he saw the obstacle (which he should have), then he should have pulled a hard, one riser/diagonal slip to avoid it.
Clearly he did not.

This is referred to as "chasing" jumps.
But it was worth it.
Before I terminated status in 2009 I was able to earn my master parachutist badge.
