I went to visit the Helena area for a funeral and I'm just taken back by the numerous houses that are on the national registry for historic places. But it is sad how it went downhill as it use to be a thriving city to the point where it was in consideration for the capitol of Arkansas.

My family used to own a farm outside of Helena, in Poplar Grove. (Population you, me, and that dog over there). When I was a kid Helena wasn't doing great but it was still going. However when I came back in my 20s the place looked like a zombie apocalypse had gone through. Half of the buildings were empty and kudzu had over grown entire homes. And that was 30 years ago, it looked even worse when I visited (for a funeral) a few years back.

There are some amazing homes in the area from the 1900s and 1910s. For a long time Helena was the center for Blues music. It really was a rival for Memphis for a while.

Grew up LSU fan, went to Ark. From Dallas area. Graduated in 2017 so it hasn't changed too much. It was a level of cold dec-feb that I had never experienced. I was wildly unprepared for it and skipped a lot of class because of it . By far the most jarring part. When you move her in I'd recommend dinner at Catfish hole or Herman's. Greek life is huge, but I would say it's less necessary for girls. My parents liked to stay in the staybridge suites when they came up for LSU games. I found it really hard to transition to Arkansas football, but I fell in love with arkansas basketball. I recommend going to as many basketball games as she can.

The staybridge in fayetteville behind the baseball stadium**

Also once she moves off campus avoid the cardinal and atmosphere apartment complexes. Its worth having to drive to campus to avoid those shite holes.

Daughter went there from ‘15-‘19 and she loved it. Beautiful campus and Dixon Street is legit for restaurants and bars. She’s getting married in late October and 3 of her bridesmaids are her former sorority sisters. She stayed true to her roots and is still a diehard Tiger fan. No complaints from us on her time spent up there. Kicked arse in school and will be graduating law school this May.

My grandparents ran the pharmacy in Helena on Cherry St right off the levy. It's really sad to see the building in terrible condition. I was last there last year when my grandma died. I doubt I'll ever go back. Still have fond memories of visiting her there when I was a kid though.

Great place. Grew up LSU fan, still an LSU fan, but graduated from there. Very safe and clean. Different environment then Baton Rouge. Only complaint is the food is not as good as LA. Stayed in NWA because once you get up here it is so hard to leave. If she is interested greek life, it is pretty good up in Arkansas. If she is a business major, no better spot for growth with a small town feel. Be careful, you might move up here soon.

Northwest Arkansas should remain a good place to live for quite a while. People are just now discovering the "suburbs".

The Waltons are determined to keep improving the area in every way they can. Downtown Springdale, for example, has always been the red-headed stepchild. There is currently over $400 million in new development underway or approved in the 10 block area, and a chunk of it is Walton money.

It isn't the place that I remember from college. Much more crowded. But its still a good place to live.

great place to live. I live in South Arkansas but no question the Fayetteville area is fantastic. She will love it.
