Long story short, we'll be moving to Tuscaloosa within the next 2 months. It's set in stone. Wife has a job with the University with a start date early June. I'll be applying and hoping for a University job as well.
Any locals want to give us a head's up on what to expect? We visited a few weeks ago, really liked the downtown scene, the traffic was nothing compared to the Baton Rouge and New Orleans traffic, the housing market isn't terrible (although we're looking to rent a home for a year or two while the housing market settles down), and found what's going to be our watering hole of choice at the Black Warrior Brewery, so we are very excited.
Forever LSU, though.

I lived in Tuscaloosa for five years and really loved it - my company had to drag me away.
Housing was reasonable - we lived in RiverChase, and the granddaughter's school was within walking distance of our home.
My company gave me a membership in North River Yacht Club (I had a choice, I could have joined Indian Hills - another excellent club).
A number of decent restaurants downtown and out and about.
I rode a motorcycle at the time and enjoyed traveling the backroads outside of Tuscaloosa.
Only negative is the proliferation of BAMA fans, kidding aside, I joined the Alabama Quarterback Club to stay abreast of college sports.

Interesting, we were hosted there also and put up at the Jack Warner at North River a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed it.

We only stayed 2 days and the only restaurant we got to go to on our own volition that we really loved was DePalma's. Very good pizza. Was really over the moon with finding the Black Warrior Brewery too.

I can imagine. We took the ~4 hour trip there and drove all the way. Could hardly believe how NICE it was around there, especially around Lake Tuscaloosa.
We are really happy to have gotten this opportunity; both to escape the New Orleans metro area and Louisiana at large. Thanks for the response.

I can't leave this topic without mentioning our favorite restaurant in Tuscaloosa: the Cypress Inn overlooking the Black Warrior River. It's a restaurant which could succeed in Louisiana - as a matter of fact they proudly display a review from the old Morning Advocate.

I visit enemy territory once a week. I do inspections for Insurance Companies on homes and commercial businesses. MY favorite house is about two blocks from the stadium. By the doorbell there is a sign ...."If you are not here to discuss the greatness of Auburn and can shout War Eagle with enthusiasm, Get the hell off my porch."

It's a great place to live, for sure. If I ever had an opportunity to return (which would be very much unexpected given my field), I'd take it in a second. I miss T-Town at least twice a week

live in Northport. if it's good enough for Saban, it should be good enough for you.

We're looking in Northport, but it is a little bit further from DCH regional where she'll be working. It's going to be a hectic 1st year so time to and from work for her is a huge factor.
Although I will say traffic when we visited in mid February was NOTHING compared to traffic in NOLA or BR.

I'd do a dry run at her commute times a couple of days before you decide to let that be a limiting factor. Traffic is generally not a big deal in Tuscaloosa.
