Looking at the map, there are scores of streets and probably 100+ empty lots immediately to the west of the South Alabama campus in Mobile. It seems fully developed with roads, street lights, storm sewer, etc but no houses. But judging by the street width and state of repair, it seems a few decades old
Does anyone know the story of this area? Is it university-owned?

to my knowledge I think USA does own at least some of it but not 100% sure.
I don't know what the plan is for that area but its creepy and kind of rapey.
seems like a good place to LARP a zombie apocalypse

It's called Hillsdale. It used to be student and faculty housing years ago then gradually went down hill until it became a dump. Not sure what USA is doing with it but when I was in school (97-01) there was a lot of talk of them selling the properties off.

I thought there was a possibility of a stadium being built.I may be wrong though.

there are two main sites being evaluated for a stadium:
hillsdale around the football complex
track/softball complex.
demolition of old buildings would have to occur at either place, but I think hillsdale would require more of an overhaul of infrastructure and roadways.
either way, there are not any real plans for a stadium right now. just chit chat
