As someone who has lived in both in the past, I'd say Alabama because of Huntsville.

I'll take Huntsville over most places in the SE.

I'm with you there - until I moved to Tuscaloosa for school again, I was outside of Asheville. There's something about the hills, the creeks, the wildlife.....it just feels right.

I have been washed in the blood and imbued with mountain values.

I'll be honest, I miss how close the mountains were for me growing up in Huntsville, but Cola isn't too bad. Two hours and I'm back in the Appalachians, and only two hours to the beach instead of six from Huntsville. And a helluva lot less tornadoes.

I need to move to the West Coast. There's nowhere in the southeast that I really want to live anymore.

The west coast is nice to visit, but I'd never want to live there. Housing prices are retarded, taxes are retarded, and most of the people are retarded. With the exception of pockets of northern California and eastern Oregon/Washington.

Look at Bend, Oregon.

Most of the people here are retarded as well.

Most non-"retarded" people object to using the word "retarded" to describe uneducated, incompetent people

I thought you live/lived there. Western NC is the best part of the Appalachians. I spent a year in the Rockies, and while breathtaking, they don't have the same feel as the Apps.

Oregon? The hippies smell great.

I don't know. Leaning toward Seattle area or San Diego.

I got back here in July. I miss Black Mountain. But familial pressures forced me to stop playing hippie farmer and actually contribute.
One of my brothers resides permanently in Telluride. I love going out there to ski (and buy cheap dope), but it just doesn't feel like home.
Looking out from Canyons in Blowing Rock off 321, peering off at the Blue Ridge, the clouds rolling across the valleys....man, that's the best expression of God to me. I feel so small and so happy.

Very nice areas. But I hope you have one helluva high paying job lined up.

San Diego is one of the best cities in the country if you can hit the right income level. Maybe even the best, depending on what you like. It would easily be my first choice of CA cities (though I'd prefer Eureka or Arcata, those redwoods are magical).
