Just put the JD Gator up from getting cattle into my calving lot for the night and I hear and see a duck struggling slapping the water with his wings in a pond in front of my house.
I figured he was tangled in fishing line or something.
I get a kayak on the truck and run down there and I finally catch him. When I pulled him out of the water I see a big turtle has him by his foot. I hit the turtle in the head with the paddle and he let him go.
Now I can pay attention to the cow I have calving.

Good job!

Do you farm cattle mostly/entirely?

Can I ask how many acres you have? How many head of cattle?

Also, are you keeping the duck?

We own 720 acres and over 200 head of cattle..

The ducks weak he or she was using its wings trying to pull itself back into the pond. I caught it again and stuck it in a pet carrier and put it in my shop for the night and put some food and water in with it.
My daughter "no pics" is picking him up in the morning. She has a 10 x 10 enclosed chicken run. She's putting food and water out for it and will turn it loose in that run. If it acts like it can fly I told her to leave the door open and let it go.
I figured if I let it loose tonight around here a turtle in the pond would get it or a coyote.

Man, that’s fantastic having land like that. I wish my head had been screwed on right once I was out of college and had worked toward getting out of the city. I was able to leave a very large Midwestern city and move to a … I don’t know what you’d call it … VERY small city, or pretty large town. But just over a line of low hills to the south of me lies an edge of the northern Indiana Amish/Mennonite country, and being out among farms where the land is fruitful is my dream.

It’s decent of you to look after the duck like that.

And, just to be clear, everything I’ve written in this post is sincere and honest.

It’s the Rant, so … you know.

It was about dark so I had to hurry. I figured it would drown if I didn't do something and I didn't want to walk out the next morning seeing it didn't make it. I have a soft heart when it comes to animals.

Sure come on over tomorrow I'm painting concrete solid stain and sealer on the stem wall of a new cattle barn that we are having built and can use the help.
The barns supposed to be delivered April 24th.

No not me I don't have time and if I did I still wouldn't. I hate spring time weather.

Did the turtle look like this?

Good job with the duck and keep us posted on updates.

I tried cat herding once, that ended my herding career.

Do you have Indians and corporations trying to buy your land? Do they ever try to drive you off your ranch? How many people have you talen to the train station?

Sorry, I'm watching Yellowstone right now and I'm a little obsessed with it to be honest.

I have those same gloves!

Sans the duck.

To those asking, there are other threads (at least on this board) where OK has posted video stills of his cattle and action shots of calving. Really great and fascinating stuff.

He did look like ole Mitch

Driving cattle sometime like herding cats. They're not very cooperative when it comes to going where you want them to go.

We get letters from companies wanting to buy our land. I'm hoping in this lifetime I won't ever have to drive anyone there.
My paintings going to get a late start it looks like I'm going to get a calf this morning.
I'll check back when I can today.
