I remember the halcyon days of living in an apartment where my combined utilities might creep over 100. During the winter I would actually panic slightly over my combined bills creeping over 120.

Now I feel orgasmic if my electricity bill is under 200.

I paid $400+ in California most months, and I didn't even have central air. That was over 10 years ago, it's probably worse now. Well I guess I should say 300+ because that bill also included gas which was around $90 or so a month.

Arizona has somewhat extreme differences, in the winter time the electricity is really cheap and then in the summer it gets really expensive. $200 differences in bills.

Most people do time of day plans where you have a period of time where it's even more expensive, but then also times of days where it's cheaper. "Peak Hours". You can adjust it some, but most people try to make it so they aren't home in the peak hours. 4 hours of peak and 20 hours of cheaper, but I guess it helps them deal with afternoon surge.

Everywhere in the southeast seems to be much more reasonable on cost.

How much of the nuclear plant is in your backyard?

Or is that like your part of it between your other 3 roommates?

That was for April. It's been a real cool spring in metro Atlanta. I would post the actual bill if I knew how to show everyone.

I stayed in California for a couple of months a few years ago and it seemed like everything was ruinously expensive. The rent my buddy was paying for a broken down trailer 15 miles outside of town would have gotten you a brand new 3 bedroom apartment next to Dickson St. in Fayetteville.

It is ridiculous. I spent about 10 years there and have been gone for over 10 now.

The house I lived in was worth $1.4 million. It was just a 3 bed, 2 bath house with a 2 car garage, but it was in Santa Clara between Downtown San Jose and Cupertino. And it had a back yard and a fence.

Nice place, as mentioned previously - no central AC.

But, the same exact house would sell for about $200k in the south.

I knew many people who lived there for awhile, sold their house, paid off the remainder of their mortgage and moved to places like Arizona and Texas, where they were able to outright buy houses while having lots of money left over.

Everything was more expensive there. Gas was over $4 at the time, which was double the price back home in the south. Groceries etc.

I ended up leaving because I just came to realize yeah I'm making way more money out here, but it doesn't really matter because the cost of living is so extreme.

Arlo Guthrie said it best.

California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see,
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi
