Since we’re in a genuine pandemic and all of the boards seem to be talking mainly about the coronavirus SARS COV2, I thought I’d share the New York Times’ excellent article about how the pestilence affects human cells.

Its dated 20 FEB 2020 and we are seeing data from trials emerge. Solid data with positive results. No the race is on to manufacture and distribute chloroquine.

I’m going to throw out a big about chloroquine being a treatment for COVID-19 until research from reputable institutions in the West are quoted. Nigeria and China? Come on, guys.

The problem with poopooing stories about treatment methods being done in china is time. China had a 2 month head start in this mess. While the rest of us were not infected they had a province drowning in cases. Unless other countries were importing thousands of volunteers from China to study, the only case studies we have are those done in china.

While not as advanced as the US and Europe Nigeria is nothing to sneer at. They have the biggest economy in Africa and are in the top 25 in the world. They also have an absurdly low amount of national debt at 16% of their GDP. Ours is 105% of our GDP.

With a growing population, a surprisingly stable for Africa government, and continuing industrialization they could become an emerging power... if the Chinese don't destroy their economy. Like the US Nigeria is increasingly becoming dependent on cheap Chinese imports and that is starting to kill off their national industry.

They don't have the drug manufacturing chops of the US but they do have a lot of hands on experience with infectious diseases. I'm not saying they've certainly produced a cure, I'm saying until we get more information and more testing is done we shouldn't dismiss it out of hand either.

Unfortunately, China’s first priority is to make their government look good. They are not necessarily interested in facts. It’s logical to think that the virus is still raging in that country despite their claims that they’ve stopped it. They have 1.4 billion people, 900 million of whom live in wrenching poverty.

The story is from Nigeria, where “evidence” doesn’t have to be vetted before it’s published. There is no evidence whatsoever that SARS 2 has any effect on cats or dogs.

I’m not criticizing Nigeria in general, especially their public health system. They stopped a potential Ebola disaster in its tracks with a sophisticated contact tracing and quarantine effort.

Rather, it’s their news media and many of their politicians that I see as unreliable. Sensationalism rules, even more so than in our country. Worse, it seems to reflect some general attitudes, or mores, of Nigeria’s population.

Sensationalism, like shutting down the country over a virus affecting .0015% of the population with 80% of the cases spread between 3 hot spots and a mortality rate of 1.8% in critical patients? That level of sensationalism?
