Don't get then out unless they're causing pain or problems. I still have the other 3. That one just got chipped somehow and I guess the nerve was exposed. I can't describe the pain when it would flare up. As bad as the recovery was, it felt a lot better than it did before the procedure.
And I left the office with a mouth full of gauze and went to the hunting camp to hunt all weekend. Killed 2 does that weekend with a mouth full of gauze and high on painkillers.

Don't they remove nerve endings and replace with filling?
Inside the tooth yes, but not the gums so it may not be too bad

I had a few reconstructive plates put on my jaw in 2008 along with some broken teeth. One of the broken teeth re-broke last year, and wasn't enough to save. Long story short, one of the plate screws was in the root of the tooth but the dentist didn't believe it, and it took over an hour to extract the tooth / grind off the screw once he finally got tired of pulling and realized he was wrong about the screw. I still hate that man today.

jesus
Between you and spleen's stories, i'm worried now.
thankfully this doc was referred to me by my work 'mentor' and he's supposed to be one of the best in Nashville. Hopefully that's the case...
plus mine seems a lot more simple than what either of you had going on. Mine doesn't even really hurt TBH

Get a highly reputable endodontist and you won't feel a thing.
I got one last year and had all of the typical fears. I didn't feel a thing. The fitting for my crown was worse.

I've had two. I'd rate them as slightly worse than a regular filling, so about a 4.
I never understood the big deal about root canals or wisdom teeth.

that's exactly what I did
my colleague/mentor is extremely wealthy, so I know he wouldn't go to anyone but the best. Or at least what he considers the best.

Don't let my wisdom tooth story scare you. My root canal was quick and painless. Just some minor discomfort for a few hours afterwards.

I took a lortab before the procedure (self medicated), so mine was pleasant as well once the gas was introduced.

The only thing I felt was the first shot to numb me up. Not bad at all. Worst part is just holding your mouth open for so long.

I've had a root canal and just today I had a wisdom tooth pulled.
I hate dental procedures, FWIW, so I may give higher numbers.
Root Canal for me was awful. Like 8-9 awful. Woman endodontist, she didn't get all the nerve endings out, I still felt pain in the tooth weeks later, and even after having the tooth built back up. Had to go back in for her to correct it, but even then I wasn't satisfied. Several dentists have told me I have "deep roots" so that may be why the root canal wasn't as successful as I would have hoped.
Eventually when they wanted to pull a wisdom tooth next to the tooth with the root canal and I just told them to take that one as well.

I've had a couple, one due to damage done to a tooth when they were cutting out my top wisdom teeth. As said, a good endo can do it without you feeling any pain. I just used OTC ibuprofen afterward. For me the discomfort of anything disturbance to the gum around the tooth was always a lot less painful than pre-root canal.

No I have had two with little to no discomfort, the numbing injection is about it and they have a topical for that now to help in some cases. And with gas it is all a piece of cake.
There are specialist, Endodontists, who do this and they know what they are doing. I used Dr. Rosenthal is who I used in Pensacola, great person, very skilled, great staff.
I was one of those folks who grew up in the 50's when dentistry sucked and those experiences stayed with me for most of my life. So I understand lyour anxiety.

Exactly. I was never told I needed them out when I was a teen.
Over the years I definitely needed one take out because it was impacting other teeth.
Most recently I was told another wisdom tooth needed to come out due to a cyst under it. Apparently this is a thing that happens when you don't get them taken out when you're younger. Not everyone, but it's not uncommon.
Anyway, the dentist really made it seem like a big health issue, I reluctantly scheduled to have it pulled and the cyst biopsied.
It was a bitch for him to get the tooth out. And he's the best oral surgeon around. And then he just says, "oh, not really much of a cyst in here. I guess it just looked bigger on the x-ray." Pissed me the hell off.

I had to have my top ones out because they were coming through and impacted. They wanted to take my bottom ones but I've had no issue with them and they haven't moved on an X-Ray in 10 years. Best decision I've made.

People complain about root canals more because of the price.
Don't think it's covered on most dental plans.
Crowns are like $950.
Pain isn't really much of an issue.
