Born on the Bayou

Meh..Born on the Bayou is definitely a southern themed song - and a great song - but done by a California band, so I couldn't ever name it greatest southern rock song. Don't get me wrong though, CCR was awesome.

yes they were from California, Bakersfield to be exact, same place Buck Owens was from. If there is a Southern town outside the South, that might be it.
But you're right, it is not the greatest southern rock song- I was just replying to the poster that said "post something from CCR"
all the lists I,ve seen so for are spot on

Some pretty solid suggestions but CCR ain't southern rock under any circumstances.
I'll add these to the list:
Call Me The Breeze (the live version of course)(Skynyrd)
Boogie No More (Hatchet)
Green Grass & High Tides (Outlaws)
Fox Chase & Highway Song (Blackfoot)
Statesboro Blues & Soulshine (ABB)
Jim Dandy (BOA)
Homesick (Quinella)
Everything Rossington-Collins Band did

Simple Man
Mississippi Queen
Hair of the Dog
Don't know if the last two count as Southern Rock but I love Em and count them as such.

Hatchet with Jimmy Farrar on vocals did a killer version of MQ so I'll allow it.......Hair of the Dog, not so much but a good song tho

Although not necessarily mainstream Skynyrd some of my favorites include:
4 Walls of Raiford
Ballad of Curtis Lowe
Ghetto (can't remember if that's the title or not)

Train Train
My favorite beginning to a song, EVER. I have heard that it was the lead singer's father who plays the harmonica part for the studio version. I think his name was Shorty - the Dad.

Yes. Shorty Medlock.
Yes, I just looked it up. It was his grandfather though and not his father. Dude could damn sure play a mean harmonica.

The song "Train, Train", written by Rickey's grandfather, "Shorty" Medlocke, became their first success and best known song. "Highway Song" proved to be another success for them later that year.

Molly Hatchet's best beginning to a song and guitar riff throughout is from "Dreams I'll never see".

Y'all have listed most of the good ones already, but I have to add "Keep your hands to yourself" by the Georgia Satellites...

You didn't say best riff, you said best beginning & IMO Bounty Hunter is a better beginning (thru the Hell Yeah)

Did you listen to Train Train?
If so, we just have very different tastes and ideas of what we consider good.
ETA: you are correct about the riff not being mentioned. I love the beginning of "Dreams I'll Never See" and the rest of the song because of the pauses where the song will go slow and they play the same riff as in the beginning each time.
