A process finally finished with the Camp David Accords a few years later. Which also had the side benefit of turning Egypt into a US client state, if not a fervent supporter of Western values.
The Egyptians hate the Israelis with a passion, 95% of their conspiracy theories revolve around things like "Mossad seeded Egypt with radioactive belt buckles to destroy men's fertility" and the like. The Egyptian government, however, has been, not friendly, but at least mildly neutral though.
When Bibi Netanyuhu and Israel got caught with their pants around their ankles by the Hamas attacks it was despite Egypt telling them, in great detail, exactly what Hamas was planning at least a week in advance. Not so much for altruistic reasons, but because Egypt was smart enough to realize a conflict between Israel and Hamas would drive refugees into Egypt... and the Egyptians have enough problems on their hands thank you very much.
