A university professor is in the habit of staring his classes with a sexist joke,

and very soon his female students get tired of it. To teach him a lesson they all agree to walk out of the class the next time he starts telling one of his dirty stories. However, the professor gets wind of this plan and decides to catch them out. At the next class he starts his lecture by saying, 'Y know, I heard that they're so short of whores in China, they're having to ship them in from abroad...' All the female students stand up and start to leave. 'Hey, not so fast ladies!' shouts the professor. 'The boat doesn't leave till tomorrow!'

The Swedes might be in contention for the oddest empire to rise to power in the history of the world. For much of history Scandinavia was a desolate hell hole. No resources to speak of, poor soil, and well behind everyone else in Europe in basic technology. The reason Vikings were so common was that there was quite literally nothing else for those folks to do. Raiding was the only chance to generate any wealth and improve your life.

But the 40 Years War changed that. The Swedes (and their Scandinavian subjects) entered the war late and had the advantage of having Gustavus Adolphus, a no kidding genius, as their king. The absolutely plowed everyone under and the last words a lot of Germans, Austrians, and Russians heard was "haakaa paalle" as the rampaging Finnish cavalry butchered them while they tried to run away. But... in the climatic battle of the war Adolphus was killed.

Future Swedish kings made the mistake of trying to take over Poland, a former country where European empires went to die, and had the same results that everyone else had... you poured in a ton of men and money and lost most of both.

Charles the 12th ascended to the throne at the age of 15... and every other Northern European power promptly declared war on Sweden. And he whipped their asses. But, having a bit of temper, Charles refused to end the war even though he could've had very favorable terms. That drew him into invading Russia and while he mauled the Russians for several years all the Russians had to do was win one battle... and they finally pulled that off a Poltava. Charles had been wounded in an earlier skirmish and couldn't command his army and his subordinates weren't up to the task. And while it would limp on for a bit longer that effectively ended the Swedish Empire.
