It's pretty convenient to Knoxville if you're going to a game. That's the only reason I can justify. But even then, you couldn't convince me to go.

Why anyone in their right mind would go to Gatlinburg is beyond me. There are tons of mountain towns to rent cabins that don't involve a mix of thousands of rednecks and Yankees.

Once you get off the main drag, Gatlinburg is a bit less crazy than Pigeon Forge. If you really want to you can get a cabin or camp in the park or make a reservation at a place like LeConte Lodge (reservations are hard as hell to come by and often done by lotto but it's in the actual park and is on top of a mountain yet still has ammenities -- it's a good balance for modern people who aren't used to roughing it but want a unique experience) and just enjoy being in the mountains.

However, not many people really want to be isolated with nothing to do on vacations/mini-vacations which is what both PF/Gatlinburg take advantage of.

All depends what you're trying to get out of the trip.

Don't buy the "moonshine"

I think there are a couple of breweries in the pigeon forge/sevierville area

If you want to see the smokies, Cade's cove is pretty but I prefer the Townsend area.

Hit the apple barn for breakfast on your way to Knoxville, it's pretty decent.

You're probably right. I'll be eating my words one day when I have to take kids there.

smoky mountain brewery is there. Up a side street to the left when heading out of town towards Cades Cove. Not bad, not great.

Gatlinburg is better then Pigeon Forge though. If you're there for the wilderness/wildlife and want to relax away from everyone check out the Townsend area. Another Entrance to the mountains like Gatlinburg, with none of the tourists.

The Titanic museum in PF is very cool, if you're into that sort of thing.

Gatlinburg is insanely touristy and crowded and trafficky and tacky and trashy and rednecky and awesome and fun

All of this at the same time. There are some awesome caves nearby.

Not that I am aware of. You're best bet is to stop in Pigeon Forge on the way in and hit a large grocery store.

breweries

There is 1 brewery in town - Smoky Mountain Brewery. If you are in Gburg heading toward the park, it is on the left and it near the last stoplight in Gburg.

Knoxville

Will have a far larger selection.

Gatlinburg. Great Smoky Mountain Brewery. It's a restaurant, has good food. And they sell growlers. I'm sure someone has already replied to you with this info as a I didn't look through the whole thread, but here's a link anyhow. LINK

Gatlinburg sucks unless you just booze the whole time and try to pretend you're somewhere else
