In catching up with this board and discovering attitudes and personalities, I found this old thread very interesting.

How profound.

How do you think that meeting would go down?

We would give them blankets with smallpox and then break all land deals.

I'm one who is skeptical of UfOs and Aliens having had visited us. I'm however, a big believer in ET in the Universe, considering the mathematical odds of being the only intelligent life. The universe is just too big to think it hasn't happened anywhere else.

The only real question is where is said other ET in their World Evolutionary timetable. Are they in the early stages, or later closer to ours. Steven Hawking has always warned us that we should be cautious as to wanting to have anything to do with another ET. He said maybe it's something that we should be more concerned about if it ever does happen one day.

We're being experimented on. Theories range from gene-splicing for species preservation, to pure academia, to finding our weaknesses to prepare our annihilation. (This last one being ridiculous tinfoil musing since I would assume an alien species with space travel technology could create a kill virus in a matter of days.)

If they can make it here we would stand the same chance against aliens as cavemen would have against our military currently. It would be total annihilation.

It's my belief we would study them from afar until such time we either discovered resources there to exploit, or we determined them to be a potential threat. At that point we would kill them. Or, we would interfere periodically with their technological progress, ensuring they never become a threat to our survival.

Initial face-to-face contact probably wouldn't take place until we could be absolutely sure we wouldn't unleash some sort of Andromeda strain scenario on either them or us. Actual contact would be held to an absolute minimum.

ETA: If our space travel technology gets to the point where we can freely travel to other planetary systems within our galaxy, the resources argument wouldn't really work either. Because at that point, you can most likely just go find another planet even more abundant in said resources that does NOT have advanced life on it and take that shite instead.

So contact would be kept to a minimum unless we found out that we are somehow related to these indigenous peoples or they posed a clear and present danger to us.

Being passive could make us look weak and invite attack.

Being assertive could make us look like a threat and invite attack.

Aliens might start shite with us, and can't likely prevent them from trying. But, if we're really successful in our development, we will be able to decide for the aliens why they will start shite with us.

Ideally, they'll be Vulcans, Wookies, or someone good-natured. We can hope, but we cannot assume it.

Been thinking on this subject since seeing the thread. Another possibility that I don't think has been covered is wormholes. If wormholes were discovered in our local system, similar to 'Interstellar' or 'Contact', then we could realistically reach an alien civilization without being that significantly ahead of them technologically. Or vice versa.

I wonder how we would handle contact with aliens closer to our level.

I don't think it makes much difference, honestly. Because I believe if we discovered a wormhole that led directly to carbon copy of Earth somewhere far off in our galaxy this is still how we would handle it. I don't think we would interfere. To study from a distance is a much more valuable course of action than potentially killing everyone involved.

Oh, and on that note, I just finished watching a pretty great show on Amazon (I think) called Counter Part. I can highly recommend it. The basic premise is that at some point in the recent past (1980's) some physicists created a wormhole of sorts here on Earth between two different timelines that diverged when one side or the other unleashed a flu virus on the other side. Most of humanity died and the entire world slid into dystopianism.

Interesting show. JK Simmons is the lead actor and does a great job. Contact between the two worlds is very strictly monitored and kept to a bare minimum
