Dollar General is the most depressing place on earth.

Sitting in my car across the street. “Suedehead” on repeat on Sirius. The drive-in root beer stand just down the way is still open though it’s almost late September and I think about how wherever you are, there life is, town’s edge or downtown. And I miss my lady, who sits at home, alone, waiting for me as the sunlight goes down.
I don’t want to go in there. DAMN.

You have to be Indiana Jones to shop in our DG with all of the boxes, carts in the way and products on the floor. Making it down an isle is an adventure.

Don’t buy the toothpaste there. Chinese chemicals and poison.

What do you need from there that you can’t get at Target?
Target has drive up. You don’t even have to talk to them.

I never did go in. I couldn’t work up the nerve, and came home with empty hands. She said she loves me nonetheless.

You sound depressed. Go to the discount isle and get a can of the smoked oysters...that should get you going.

Dollar General HQ is just north of Nashville. Like 6 to 8 story building you can see on the left when you are headed south on the interstate.
I only shop the hood DG's so I can get my stories. Never really noticed if the place was depressing as the ladies working there are always entertaining. The exit just north of the HQ was a sprawling old K Mart and shopping and DG bought the whole thing and it was like a mega DG. Pretty awesome, but not been there since c19 so who knows if the concept worked.

If you had added, "I've become so decadent and drunk, and don't give a shite," I would swear I was reading Kerouac.

By the way, now I'm going to be singing this fricking (slightly different) song in my head all day. Thanks.

I used to work for a landscape company that had a contract with the company that built Dollar Generals in AL, TN, and NC. One year I had to trek from north Alabama, up through east Tennessee to NC, hitting all the new DGs that had been built to winterize their irrigation systems. One of the ones I stopped at in Chattanooga, there had been a shooting across the street the night before. Then iMaps took me off the beaten path in the mountains of NC and thought some real life Appalachian mountain man might confuse me for a revenuer and I'd never be heard from again. Was quite a trip.

If anyone wants some background on these types of stores, here's a nice (20-minute) video that explains their business model quite well.

Yep. Took a wrong turn in the hills of East Tennessee one time. Wasn't sure I'd make it out alive. Thank God for my white privilege.

I'd never seen an interstate exit ramp lead directly to a gravel road, but indeed it did. Somewhere around Maggie Valley.
