I like most greens, prepared with bacon or ham, & zero sugar. Savory, not sweet.

I've never had them, but don't care for beets.

What about kale?

Yes.

What about poke?

I haven't had that since I was a little girl, but I remember it wasn't bad.

I won't eat beets but the leaves taste similar to spinach and I love spinach.

There were a lot of common vegetation folks used to eat but greens like poke needed proper methods of cooking. Kids don't cook anymore never learned about all the natural goodness around them. Now it is all hot dogs and chicken nuggets. Too much sugar and salt in everything now instead of fresh spices and simple foods.

I like poke salad, but wasn't there something about cooking or picking it that could be tricky or even dangerous? Wish I could flash back and ask granny!!

I agree. I'm really thankful I had grandmothers who taught me how to prepare the natural, simple foods, and an appreciation for growing their own vegetables. During the summers when I was young, we ate veggies, and very little meat unless it was used for seasoning. If you didn't like vegetables, you didn't eat.

Yes, one weed you could eat young and another you could not. Poke had toxins so knowing when to cut and how to prepare was very important as I was always told that doing it wrong was fatal.

Exactly, couldn't for the life of me remember what granny said about that.. I've seen a few good lookin patches of poke, but was very hesitant to pick and cook..

We always grew stuff and canned it in the root cellar. Summer meant fishing so we ate a lot of fish in the summer.

That was true for us, as well. Fried bream, crappie, bass, & catfish were a staple during the summers. It seems like we went fishing every other day. Good times.

CG, hmmm, we sound like we're from the same century
We raised cattle and had large truck patch for all veggies.. I used to love to drive the mule with the tater sled behind it!!
We had meat most every meal, usually fried in lard, including steak, beef and pork. Lots of canning of veggies, also meats , including duck, etc.. Seems like a long time ago..
Heck,, it was!
