Having experienced the Mexican government, do you get a chuckle when you see Americans bitching about our government? I have a friend living in China and he mentions that all the time when he's back visiting the states.
I actually post this on Facebook more than anything else. Any time I hear ''Police State'' or something akin to that I usually link them to the dozens of times Mexican police officers have kidnapped people.
My girlfriend's uncle actually got carjacked and kidnapped by a pair of police officers who stole everything.
His car, wallet, clothing, phone, glasses. Everything. If you see police outside of your home, you should get worried.

Pregunta de la Puebla. They'll ask for a bribe and I'll pay them off.

This is year two of me being here, a year and a half over my initial visa but I haven't ever been arrested before in America, I doubt I'll attract enough attention to warrant anything. There has never been a single instance of an American being deported without having necessitated American interest in the person as far as I know.

Can you drink the water?

No. That's totally truth. I haven't drank even a drop of it since I got here. But, bottled water is cheaper as it's subsidized so at least I'm completely ready for the zombie apocalypse. I have about 15 gallons on hand at any given time.

That's exactly right. I've also had to up my dental-visits here because my teeth have been damaged from being in MXC. So, I regularly floss (which I never did in America) and use mouthwash to keep them healthy. But, when I first got here they got noticeably yellower.

Well shite, I don't want to work with a bunch of Chinese folk. Peddling shark fin, shite is not gangster.
Good luck with the local cops. Me and a group of bros had to pay off a bribe to avoid jail in Tijuana several years back. That cocksucker counted heads to determine our bribe. I was furious and hungover. But hey, we put food on his table for a month.

Yeah man, the State and Federal police are generally okay but it's those goddamn bastards who drive the motorcycles who are generally pretty bad. I've never been shaken down (I always make sure to move away from police officers), but I'm waiting for the day to come. That's why when college kids whine about how ''mean'' America's police officers are I chuckle and tell 'em to move to Mexico for six months.
See if their perception changes.

Eh, life is more simple here. Mexico just had a lot of reforms to try and become...uh...more respected and ended up looking much worse. For a day's work, the minimum wage is 50 pesos or about 4 dollars and some change.
On this side of the world, Mexico has the second highest disparity between rich and poor and the second lowest wages.
So, once you figure out the game, everything after that is easy.

Do you ever find yourself chanting "dos-a-cero" just because?
Posted on 1/27/14 at 9:42 am to StrawsDrawnAtRandom
Have you visited Morelia? I was there several years ago and was extremely impressed with the city.

Sometimes ''Remember The Alamo''. :)
Ironically most of them don't even understand that reference.
More ironically, most Americans don't know that we effectively took over all of Mexico during the Mexican-American war.

Michoacán is a very, very bad place to go right now. I haven't had the chance but I've heard that it's very similar to Córdoba, Veracruz which was amazing.

The school where you teach... Private I'm guessing? How is the school? What do most of the kids want to be when they grow up? Do they know you're American?
I've always been intrigued by "the American Dream" and how kids in different parts of the US are raised and then how that differs internationally.
ETA: I've got a lot of questions for you. Might not have the time today though. Definitely gonna have to come back to this thread

Training for all of the Civil War generals on both sides.

Hey man, I have a lot of free time so ask everything you want. I seek to educate.
I am actually an independent teacher with about...20 students I'd say. I have a corporate class that consists of 7 at a bakery company (international) called Bimbo.
I have about 3 students who are children (under the age of 18) and two former students who moved on. The majority of them wish to go to Europe or America and do not want to stay in Mexico.
In my experience there are two types of Mexicans: Those who really dislike America, and those who idolize it with a sort of ''Malinchism'', which is a word to mean a person who likes foreign things rather than domestic.
I live right next to a high school and I wish I could teach them (but I'm sure my girlfriend would have a fit) and see what they thought as it's a public school. All of my students are private and so they have phantasmagorically differing ideology than your run-of-the-mill Mexican.

Indeed. A lot of soon-to-be enemies worked together to defeat Mexico.

How did you find housing? What does your girlfriend think of the US? Have you met her parents?
