Anyone heard about this clown epidemic in the Carolinas?

Apparently, some randos dressed up as clowns have been spotted in numerous cities standing at the edge of the woods and being creepy as frick.
One incident in Winston-Salem involved a clown trying to lure two kids into the woods with candy but he got away when the police arrived.

Another incident in Greenboro happened with a clown creeping in a residential neighborhood's nearby woods. A man spotted the clown and chased after the clown with a machete but was not able to catch him.

I believe it's a guerilla marketing campaign setup by the movie IT that is being released next year.
