I was out in that area for work last fall, and the smell was indescribably awful. Worst thing I've ever smelled. Those residents are right to be pissed off.

How far away were you?...and not that you would know but is this the kind of smell that will go away after time or is this area going to smell like dookie for decades?

My client's office was on the route the trucks took from the rail yard to the landfill. I was pretty far away(5-10 miles maybe) from the actual landfill, but anytime one of those trucks came by the smell lingered for 10-15 minutes. Client said there was often spillage from the trucks, and the smell would linger even longer when that happened. And on windy, humid days the smell would carry from the landfill to there.
I can only imagine how bad the smell is closer to the landfill.
