Sunday @ 11am, the end of the first of two wars that still shape the world we live in.

I’ll be at the WW1 memorial in KC when they commemorate the moment.

Quite possibly the most important conflict in the history of our species. The set world order that had held firm for hundreds of years was swept away and Europe, at the apex of its power over the rest of the world, was fatally weakened.

World War II was just hammering home that the world had changed.

The scary thing is it was a war that happened despite none of the Great Powers wanting it.

It's just one episode in the long series of Germans kicking the shite out of Britons; Angles, Saxons, Danes, Normans...and the beat goes on. Who cares.

I love British history, I'm working my way through Churchill's histories now, but the island's importance is vastly overplayed especially here because we're in the Anglosphere.

It sure is, and we'd speak it, if not for the Battle of Hastings ;)

I'm confused, I thought you were saying that we don't speak French because of Hastings, that article confirms what I already knew...that the English we speak has a fair amount of French because of Hastings.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you and you're saying that Hastings is important because it brought that change and I'd agree. I'd also agree that Hastings was important, but saying that it was more important than WW1 is kind of tricky. Both were important in shaping our world but one much more so because of its recency.

Working my way through the History of English Podcast. Really interesting to see the evolution of our language and the history behind it. It’s even better if you know another language like French or German and can see the similar changes.

WW I also brought the worst pandemic in history. H1N1 killed up to 100 million people world wide in 1918-19.
