We started about a week ago. So far we seem to be getting the dreaded work in progress label.

Several players are doing very well in the new fast pace system, but we recruiting big and slow for years under Bert. Even with a reasonable schedule the Hogs will have a fight to get bowl eligible this season.

Here is the pre spring depth

LINK

No real surprises here. Biggest position battles will be the safety spots (Hilton and Perkins) listed now. The DE opposite Williams (Turner listed now), the CB spots (Acy and Sparks), the DT opposite Beckner (Whiteside listed now) and the WR to replace Moore (Brown listed now).

We also have some true FR that could figure in those roles. Specifically at WR.

The offense looks stacked and ready to roll. The defense has a fair amount of questions still.

Acy might move to safety if Homes and Sparks have good springs. Oliver will be in line to start or at least get snaps when he gets here this summer.

I've read that a lot, but it simply doesn't make sense to me when you look at the numbers we have at safety vs what we have at corner.

I'd be pretty surprised

Hilton getting primary reps is disappointing. He is a taller version of Matt White.

Secondary is going to be awful, might as well just accept it now we're going to be in shoot outs all season.

Good old Big 12-2=total shite conference style games.

Better hope the front four set records for sacks.

it's snowing

the secondary might not be as god awful as last year if they can do something about Hilton which I guess is why Acy might move, but then who is the other corner? We really only have 3 starters for 4 secondary positions and God help us if we get injured. LB's aren't amazing either.

Despite the terrible start last season’s secondary finished up solidly mediocre.
Finished 46 in S&P+ passing defense.

If the DL is close to as good as it should be defense will be pretty good this season.

Last year the D was good enough to put good teams in 3rd and long but then they would just chuck something at the corners or over the middle and pick up the first down most of the time. Don't see any reason to expect any different this season.

Yep. Could never stop anyone on 3rd down because our Secondary is total trash and we lost the only dude back there who had any idea what he was doing.

DLine should be good, so just expect teams to throw the ball 40 times a game.

I miss the hell out of EJ Gaines. Was such a stud DB.

Odom better get himself a talent like that.

We might not be as good as the SEC champs who lost on a last second TD in the title game??? No way!!!!

And this is cracking me up already. We certainly have questions in the secondary but we won't know what "we have" until we start playing games. We have several young players back there that could step up. I like Hilton better thuan the rest of you apparently.

Yes, we know. You live in la la land and get pissed at anyone that doesn't, but some of us want to talk about the actual team so why don't you just ignore that

You also have to take into account that the offense we ran last year is horrible for the defense. The majority of the time we either scored quick, or gave the ball back quick.

Our defense faced the most plays of any team in the league last year. If you look at our per play yards against we were in the upper half of the league.

We should be running an offense this year that is more focused on winning football games than just putting up numbers.

The secondary in the second half of the season wasn’t that bad. It still wasn’t a good defense, it was slightly above average.

Th best thing for the secondary this season would a return of a dominant DL. The second best thing would be for some of the young corners to develop so that Acy can play his more natural. That’s Mills, Collins, Sparks, Holmes and Petry.
