Thoughts on Chappell being the #1 LT???

I'm not sure how comfortable I am about that. I know Cuellar is likely to push for it and I'm hoping he's good enough to take it. I don't dislike Chappell but I don't know how comfortable I am with it either.

Chappell supposedly played last year injury, but I agree not sure about him as the LT.

I'm not a big fan of it. He didn't play very well last year, but he had an injury so who knows.

If Cuellar can beat him out then he probably moves back to the right side, pushing Rhodes to the bench. Then you still have Howell coming in.

Taking 2 JUCO tackles leads me to believe the staff wasn't comfortable with what they had there.

I wouldn't mind letting Chappell back up Cuellar on the left side if the positive talk about Rhodes holds true to form. Then I wouldn't mind seeing Rhodes or Howell as 1a and 1b on the right side. Of course, that's a lot of speculating without seeing how they've progressed.

With all the praise of Rhodes, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the starter on the right side. Chappell sucked last year. If JUCO kids can beat him (I hope they can) all the better.

I'm gonna bet Howell won't beat him out. Maybe if he had gotten here for spring, but in the relatively short period of fall camp, I'm gonna doubt he passes him. Just my gut and no more.

I'm with yall on Chappel, but I know Pinkel and it's incredibly difficult for anyone to unseat a returning starter. We'll see. Either way, we need better play from the RT.

Or, I could even see them moving McGovern back outside which would be a mistake as well. He's a great guard. I've never liked the "find the five best guys" and slot them wherever routine. Some guys are better fits for different positions and CM has definitely played much better at guard.

I don't think (hope) they will move McGovern outside again. They had him there last year and moved him back inside. Plus, I think we have other guys who are capable at tackle.

frick...

quote:

Ricker said having a nucleus of Evan Boehm and Connor McGovern in the middle of the line benefits the whole unit, but there's also no guarantee McGovern is sticking at right guard. With Brad McNulty coming off injury and Mitch Hall and Taylor Chappell making five seniors, Ricker has options: "Who's to say that Connor, by the end of spring or camp, won't be playing tackle? I can't say the plan, but just that experience with those two guys helps."

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DISLIKE THIS

quote:

"One thing I don't want to do is musical chairs every day. But at the end of the day, you've got to see who is the right fit. You've got to get the best five. If they're all centers, all tackles, it doesn't matter. You've just got to get the best five out there."

I would only want to move McGovern to a tackle spot if he could anchor down the left side. I really question if he'd move him to right tackle. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we start last year with Hall and McNulty at guard and McGovern at RT? But then the 2 of them just weren't cutting it, they moved McGovern back inside and McNulty over to the left side? Am I wrong? If not, they've already experimented with that.

The only thing I can see kicking McGovern outside is if someone like Bauer is proving himself at guard.

It was a season ending injury to the left guard that caused the online shuffle last year.

GP has also been quoted saying that you don't recruit JUCOs to have them sit. Would be surprised if both of the JUCO OL aren't in the rotation.

That's right. It was Gatti right? And I think off the bat they tried to keep McGovern outside but eventually moved him back in.

I'm pretty confident Cuellar will be. I always get a bit iffy when guys don't get here until the summer. Even if that's the case, I'd bet Howell works his way into a rotation through the course of the year.

Really isn't much of a rotation on the OL. Starters play 95% of the snaps unless you have some sort of time share like McNukty and Hall had. That usually means either one isn't very good.

I thought LG and RT could have been a lot better last year. Looks like Bauer is working at C right now, so one of those two will likely be the LG and the tackles are kind of up in the air.

I didn't mean so much during the course of a game. I meant as they're feeling themselves out over the course of the scrimmages and the opening 4 games, trying to find the right combination.

I see. It's not a big deal to me who gets the spots, but I wasn't impressed with McNulty, Hall or Chappel.

Of course, they could all improve and I hope they have. We just need better play from the LG and RT.

Walters has some sort of leg injury. Sounds fairly serious.

"I've probably stepped up more in the last two days than I have in the last two years," Mauk said. "That's something I really want to focus on, and just getting the ball out quick, getting it to our guys and letting them make plays."

WE'RE GONNA WIN THE SECCCCC!

"First off, his speed, he's a lot faster(mauk)," Laurent said. "You can see it in his footwork and just everything. He moves way faster. And he's also throwing the ball downfield as he's moving. He's doing a great job there.
