CNB, what starters are hurt or questionable besides Shaw?

I think the OP preview sold Thompson short in a big way..

Fair assessment. I went into it just planning on writing about information I could find on this year. I did that with my last preview too, thinking outside of this year just brings too much bad Mizzou juju for me to be comfortable so to keep it fair I always just use this year's info.

Thompson looked like he'd been there before in the UCF game this year, and when I was participating in the USC game thread vs UCF I got the feeling a lot of USC fans weren't nervous at all given the circumstances, which at the time was a major departure from how I would expect the Mizzou game thread to react if Franklin went down and my expected reaction was later confirmed in the Georgia game.

Thompson did look like an experienced QB out there when I saw him in the UCF game, and while the stats do tell a portion of the story, the execution of the USC offense even when they were acting in what seemed at the time fairly conservatively with him in did execute and produce.

If there's a team we've played so far this year whose backup QB could produce a winning game against the Tigers, it's USC with Thompson. I'd have said the same thing last week before the Florida game as well. Having Shaw out is a benefit for the Tigers, but it's not nearly the benefit most would expect. They'll be playing a different game than they would with a 100% healthy Shaw, but their game with Thompson is just as formidable, and has a good shot at knocking Mizzou off.

Here are some comments from Gamecock fans on their defense...
quote:

very young, And with that comes the out of position and misreads that lead to big plays. Which is why you see DB's cutting guys loose thinking they are in zone when they are in man coverage. LB's jumping in the wrong gap resulting in big runs. The injury to Quarles is really gonna sting as he was a force in the middle eating blocks, I expect to see teams try to run up the gut now and test that area. But the secondary is the bigger issue although they are coming around (albeit slowly) the key position in our defense is the spur and we have not had consistant play from that position.

quote:

They're talented, but young. On the line we might be without Kelcey Quarles (stupid Tennessee knee killers...), our best DT. JT Surrat has been showing up lately at the other DT position and Sophomore Phillip Dukes is going to have to step up if Quarles is out. A lot was expected out of Chazz Sutton opposite Clowney at DE, but he has been pedestrian at best. The line, when playing together and healthy can be stout, but we'll have to wait until Saturday to see if they want to show up.

Our LB group is replacing five contributors from last year. We have one Jr in the three deep with the rest being RS Sophomore or lower. TJ Holloman at MLB has been playing better as of late and Marcquis Roberts (WLB) and Sharrod Golightly (SPR) are the other starters. One of the Freshman who has stepped up big in a supporting role is Skai Moore. His number 10 will be seen on a lot of plays for a guy coming off the bench.

Our two starting corners (Vic Hampton, JR, and Jimmy Legree, SR) are upper classmen who have shown both flashes of brilliance and a penchant for WTF moments. I, personally, have really appreciated the play of Legree in both coverage and run support. The best corner behind those two is Ahmad Christian who continues to improve as he sees more of the field. (It was his coverage on North for that miraculous catch that got them within field goal range. He did pretty much everything you could ask on that play and had the opportunity to knock it away.) Safety has been hit or miss all year, but getting Chaz Elder back at FS should help shore it up a bit. As a unit it, it's probably our weakest by perception, but they are sitting at third in the conference at just under 200 yards per game.

Earlier in the year our defensive inexperience was much more apparent, but has strengthened as they get more games under their belt. They were outstanding against Arkansas and kept us in the game with UT while our Offense floundered. As they continue to improve around Clowney it only helps to elevate his game.

You did a great job Mizzeaux, just giving you hell about Thompson.

I am now going to bed with a smile on my face after reading this post from a Cock fan in a Rant thread. What a difference a year makes! Or at least a winning year.

I think yall will win this game. Maty Mauk looked better last week against Florida than I was expecting him too. I for see him playing even better this week. Also, Conner Shaw will be out this week, which isn't saying to much there back up is just as good as Conner. Y'alls Offense and Defensive line is a big key this week for yall.

Even though we need yall to loose so we could still have some kind of shot to win the East. But, I am not getting me hopes up
Yall will win this @ Home!

Our 2nd string qb for the SC game will be a red shirt freshmen WR. that's scary.

Yep. Our OL vs Clowney, and our DL vs Davis. Those are key match-ups for me. Another thing I'll be watching is their secondary against our receivers.

And regardless of who wins the East? I think we're all probably playing for the privilege of getting spanked by Alabama.

Strongly Agreed!!! I really don't think we have a shot in Hell!!!
We are going to loose to Auburn and GA Tech more than likely.

As already said, don't sell Dylan short. Watch his game against Clemson last year.... put up video game numbers. That said.... be glad Shaw is out. Your DE's will have a field day with Dylan.

Secondly, my instinct tells me this game will come down to alot of people saying "That's bullshite!" ... whether some really awful ref call that changes the game, or some really bad no-call late in the game, something just tell me there will be a "bullshite" moment, I just don't know who will be the beneficiary.

Overall, best pre-game writeup I've ever seen on the SECR. Normally people get made fun of for putting thought into posts.

Thank you!! We do this every week, with a different poster responsible for each game. We like it.

Oh, and we always expect that "bullshite" moment. We're Mizzou. Home of the 5th down, and the kicked ball touchdown. We specialize in BS moments, and that never go in our favor.
