Pinkel and Richt are almost the exact same person.

As an outsider, this is kinda my thought too. Very weird dynamic with these guys in that most fan bases do not feel "threatened" by the coach but would also be okay with him being their coach.

Eta: I would of course not give Saban up, but Pinkel is clearly better than every coach we have had in-between Bryant and Saban (sans IMHO Stallings but even that is debatable).

Pinkel is a good coach, and the contract extension gives him the credibility he needs to recruit. That's a stability move, and I doubt he coaches until 2020.

He's similar to Richt in many ways, it's a fair comparison. Pinkel has built a good program in Columbia, and I do expect the next coach to be a splashier hire because of that. The difference now is that we're in the sec, and way too much money is riding on a successful football program. Mike Alden is a businessman, and he understands this. We can't lowball an offer or go after an average coach. Too much is at stake.

I am not against the extension, but the defensive schemes need work. If we would have had a lick of defense or any adjustments whatsoever we probably win that Auburn game.

I get that he has loyalty to his coaches and that Ford is a great recruiter, but I am hoping that he has sat down those coaches and emphasized getting better/changes on that side of the ball.

This past year was a fun time. Me and the lady friend did road trips to UK, UGA, and the SECCG. So a big shout out to GP for making those all fun trips (sucks we lost to Auburn, but the atmosphere before and during the game was great).

Just a few things to chew on about 'great' coaches vs coaches that come close to winning but can't seem to break through.

Active NCAA coaches that have actually played for a national championship as head coach: 10
Active NCAA coaches that have won a national championship as head coach: 6

Jimbo Fisher*, Nick Saban*, Urban Meyer*, Les Miles*, Bob Stoops*, Steve Spurrier*, Frank Solich, Frank Beamer, Gus Malzahn, Brian Kelly

Also available for hire: Mack Brown, Gene Chizik, Jim Tressel.

Not counting Pete Carroll, Chip Kelly, or Larry Coker who are on these list and still coaching but not in the NCAAs any longer.

Other than these guys, every other coach is trying to get over that proverbial hump.
