I agree with you on that. The point I was trying to make is, he needs to learn that he CAN'T do that anymore. I think there is potential, and think we will dig into him and find it.

Maybe he'll be able to drop the habit, but after 2 years in the program I have some doubts. Hopefully the game experience will help him progress.

My concern is that if he were to remain in the pocket longer can he handle the repeated hits that he'll take? I don't think so. It's a catch 22, he sort of needs to scramble, but he's not as athletic as JFF.. so his scrambling isn't very effective.

I agree. He'll learn what he can and can't do on this level.

His size (another of ST's concerns) is what it is, but his arm and accuracy look to be top shelf.

Plus, he's willing to stand in there and take a hit to make a throw (yeah, I'm looking at you Gabbert).

To me the potential positives far outweigh the negatives for Mauk.

I agree with this.

But. I would hope that this coaching staff would see this. You can't make a kid put on the weight necessary, but it can also indicate to the staff how much this kid is dedicated to the success of the program. He should put on more weight. Franklin was not always 230 lbs. He started out bigger than Mauk, but Mauk can help himself be adding some muscle over the summer.

Also. I don't have a problem with him scrambling, but to me given his size and the abiliities I've seen, he to me would be better suited trying to slide up in the pocket or to the open areas. But keeping his focus down field. He needs to be making a decision at that point of where his running lane should be. I don't think this staff wants to run him every three plays. They want him throwing the ball. Just an observation.

I think Mauk has a very good arm, and talent - no question there. The backwards scrambling has to stop because that will lose games. (I don't blame him for Saturday's loss, there is a lot of blame to go around there.)And his decision-making is questionable, but that is probably to be expected given his inexperience.

IF he is going to be the answer next year, he has to put on muscle and improve his thought process on the field. I like some of his leadership qualities, but he needs to mature.

Bottom line, we're in much better shape with him at backup than we were last year, but I hope Franklin is recovering well. We need to either win out, or drop only one and hope for help. I think Franklin gives us the best chance for that.

I am too lazy to read through all the comments on here. I will just say this. I feel like 3 things lost us the game. In order from least to biggest reason we lost. 3. Bagget missing kicks. 2. Poor secondary play. 1. Mauk's pocket awareness killing drives.

The 40 yarder Mauk missed should have been a 30 yarder and maybe even a touchdown drive. But Mauk went all Gabbert and felt pressure that was not there and ran backwards and got sacked. It is the thing we all worried about against Florida and it got us against USC. The biggest difference in the Florida and USC game is against Florida we ran the ball with success. Beside 3 or 4 runs we could not run on USC and we had to rely too much on MM.
