Former UALR head coach Steve Shields.

Former RockMNation
quote:

Shields played at Baylor in the 1980s and spent a decade as a JUCO assistant before Porter Moser brought him to UALR. He took over for Moser after three 18-win seasons, won five Sun Belt division titles and won the 2011 Sun Belt conference tournament. His Trojans lost in overtime in the First Four to UNC Asheville. This year, according to Pomeroy stats, his final UALR team was fantastic at avoiding turnovers and blocked shots; they got semi-clean looks on every possession. Unfortunately, they didn't really make many of those shots. Shields brings quite a bit of Division I experience and a JUCO background to the table, even if his D1 experience was at a mid-major.

Seems to fit in.

Only 6 winning seasons. Barely .500 overall. Not good enough for UALR but good enough for Mizzou. He does have D1 experience so there is that.

But apparently his kids had great academic achievements.

He's a special assistant so no big deal but don't see anything here that makes me buy those tickets to Houston quite yet.

If you understood this, why type out all of that other nonsense? He is over qualified for the position. Based on our budget this seems like a good hire.

Is he even allowed to sit on the bench? I always thought the bench coaches were the 3 assistant coaches. Does anybody know if Barbee sits on UK's bench?

This is exactly the kind of guy a lot of KA "haters" would have loved to have had on board from the beginning. I think someone with that type of resume in this kind of position is perfect for the team.

I think we have a .500 team and now maybe we can hit that potential.

Because it's a message board and it's fricking slow. At the end of the day, who really cares. He's barely a coach. But having been a HC he probably is over qualified like was said. Hopefully can add to the team.

He could have a big impact on the staff. His level of experience for scouting teams, creating gameplans, noting tendencies and situational charts could really benefit the staff. As you like to put it, maybe they won't look as clueless. Him doing this stuff allows the other coaches more time to focus on development. Maybe some slight improvements on logistics allows the team to be more ready and prepared. Who knows, I just don't understand why you were trying to belittle the hire.

Probably because our program sucks.

Hope this hire helps. I doubt it will have any significant impact.

I don't know if it is belittling or not. Seems most of what I said was actually factual other than it's not getting me to buy tickets to Houston.

6 winning seasons in 12 - FACT
Barely .500 overall - FACT
Fired from UALR - FACT
Hired by Mizzou - FACT

It just is what it is. Like I said and like 808 said...hopefully the guy helps the team to be successful, maybe by doing the things you listed. At the end of the day, though, it is still just a special assistant and this program isn't going to sink or swim with him. It is going to sink or swim with KA.

It would be a good hire even if we won the championship last year. Increasing your support staff is a good sign that the school will back the program. In theory, it should make everyone more productive. It at least is something you can show the next coach you hire to help persuade them.

I don't know if it will or won't and we won't know for awhile. That will be a good discussion down the road.

Reread your post and the tone is definitely belittling his accomplishments especially when applied to a support staff role. With the state of the program right now, hiring a former mid major HC with 6 winning seasons of experience is a pretty good accomplishment. I still don't understand why you say it is just a special assistant when creating that job is nothing but positive. If he does anything to help the team it will be an improvement over not having that position.

You sir, get an upvote. In fact, if I could give you multiple upvotes, I'd still be hitting the button now.

I get what you're saying. I think. You're more talking about the position period, regardless of who filled, as being a sign that the AD is willing to back/support the program. That I agree with 100%. As for Shields credentials..sorry...doesn't move the needle one bit. The position and support that is shown though is a bigger deal than who fills that position in the light I understand you to be talking about.

The fact it does in any capacity for some in the fan base/alums worries me honestly.

Actions speak louder than words. People that constantly post derogatory statements about the program and coaches are either haters or have the emotional intelligence level of jr high kids. Posters should quit trying to cover up their hatred and just own it. Here is a good read on the personality trait for message board haters LINK

So you post about the "haters" again instead of facing the fact that die hard Mizzou fans love Kim but dont think he is capable of getting the job done?

I love Justin Smith but if he were hired as Pinkel's replacement I would grab a drink, say what the frick, and argue with you on the internet because you are a blind frick that has no clue and argues your point because he is a true son and can do no wrong after going 4-8.

Lets have a class in irony.

You said

while berating folks for questioning a coach who has failed to deliver results on the court.

What are you talking about? Are you a hater?

Nope. Im a Tiger.
