Opening weekend is a bye week. Second weekend is a road game (Ole Miss).

It would have to be a pretty big game to get me to Columbia on opening morning of deer season. It has nothing to do with actually killing a deer anymore. It's a tradition with good friends and family that takes me back to childhood every year.

That makes sense.

When I first moved to Columbia, my apartment backed up to some woods. There was a herd of deer that liked to run under my window every morning. Dad wanted to sit on my balcony with his bow.

And Garfield - duct tape? Really?

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Morels aren't technically mushrooms. They are from a different phylum than mushrooms.

Not joking. I have tried to suppress most of my childhood (and ingest large quantities of beer to keep it suppressed) but my dad still tells this story frequently to many people he introduces me to.

He thinks it embarrasses me not him (i.e., "He's always been a city boy, hell he used to fall asleep in tree stands, probably saved his life by duct taping him in.").

The kicker is that I don't ever really recall falling asleep in a tree stand but I did wonder off a tree stand and they didn't find me until pretty late that night, the strapping in started soon after. IIRC he usually used rope but he just remembers using duct tape.

Much like Aux Arc, this doesn't sound odd to many. My brother shot a deer out of his bedroom window (rifle not bow) when we were in HS. My dad lives in a pretty rural neighborhood and has put salt blocks and a corn feeder in the woods across from his porch.

My dad passed away last year, but the family still has the hunting camp he set up - 40 acres of woods bordering a national forest in southern Missouri - deep in the Ozarks. There is a little pond, salt licks, etc. Permanent tree stands. A little "cabin" with 8 bunk beds. Just a hunting camp, but they love it out there.

Oh frick you, nonsense98. You know damn well people refer to morels as mushrooms and to morel searching as mushroom hunting.

fricking squirrels are tree rats, but we call them squirrels because they're cuter than sewer rats.

Sorry to hear about your dad..lost mine in 98.

Sounds like me and him have the same taste. Sounds like my kind of paradise. Im hoping to have something like that one day. Im going up around Stockton. My buddies sister and BIL have a few acres and have permission on more up the road. Just my chance to really relax.

It is really pretty there. Very remote, only accessible with a 4-wheel drive on logging roads. It's outside Van Buren, MO, close to the Current River. Very rugged, heavy woods. I like it there.
