It seems Lucas has had at least one terrible drop every game. They seem to come at terrible times, too.

Dunno. It seems he also comes up with some of our biggest catches too. Regardless, I've come to believe the problem isn't so much with the players. I really don't think we lack as much talent as this season makes it seem. Frankly, if it weren't for defensive/special teams touchdowns, even the SLU game would have been close.

I get Alden's philosophy, and would normally agree. However, there's too much at stake right now. If we were to get the opportunity to make coaching changes, we should get the best talent we can. There's too much money at stake, and we have a window to establish ourselves in this league before we become a job the best coaches won't consider.

Like Pinkel said, if we're going to make a commitment to go to the SEC, there has to be a commitment across the board on all issues. Hopefully that commitment is there in hiring a new head coach if/when that becomes necessary.

And this is what scares Me. I am scared that Alden is going to play it safe and aim to get the low level coach that will absolutely accept, instead of the guy that can take us to the next level. I think we are worried about our perception and dont want to be a job that gets turned down once or twice. Personally I think a guy like Charlie Strong is worth the risk. I mean going to the Sun Belt for a coach is fine, but I sure hope that is not the first call.

Couldn't agree more and have seen some good names tossed out there. What do you think the odds are that a coach such as Strong or even a Smart would come to Mizzou? Just a question of $$$?

It's money, but I think it's also commitment to the program. A good coach, who wants to compete in the SEC, would want assurances that we're going to invest in facilities, recruitment, marketing, etc. Our department budget is one of the lowest in the SEC, as is our recruiting budget. A good coach would want to know that will change before making a move here.

Look at Will Muschamp, for example. He was head coach in waiting at Texas, and had the deal all worked out. But....Florida offered money, and a willingness to invest and bring their program back to prominence. And now they're doing very well, and their defense is kicking arse.

If we're going to get a high-caliber coach to come here, they'd want money, commitments about the direction of the department and program, and assurances that it would not be a career-damaging move.

I dont think Strong would come. I think Smart would. The one thing holding us back I fear is that they feel we are too far from FL/GA to sell a high number of top prospects to come out here. I dont think that is entirely the case, and I think most would see that we could pull midwestern kids to us that want to play in the conference, but it all depends on how hard Alden is selling. It gives me hope with how far we got with Matt Painter. I realize he didnt end up coming, but apparently he originally accepted. That was a hell of a job by Alden to get us even that close. If you pile on top of that the emphasis to "step up", I think he will be selling REALLY hard trying to show he is dead serious. Somebody is coming, and we have shown we will pay. What say you?

So the stars all align at the end of Pinkel's current contract. I think he has 5 more years? In 5 years we will hopefully see that increase in budgets and a good chunk of the initial facility upgrades should be done. Probably take about 5 years to get a better foot hold in SEC country as far as recruiting. Probably take that long to adjust to and be competitive in the SEC. I would like to think that in 5 years Mizzou will be an extremely attractive job. Seems like a lot of things will have come together right at the end of his current contract.

Personally I am hoping the transition is made before then.

I don't see Pinkel leaving unless he decides to retire. We might, just might, be able to get a new OC though.

I know he'd never take an OC position, but boy would I love to see Mike Leach as an OC.

Our recruiting budget is competitive in the SEC. It was fairly high nationally last time I saw the numbers each school spent on recruiting. You gotta remember that SEC schools don't travel far to look for talent. They don't need big budgets.

Overall budget wise, MU will be just fine. Probably middle of the pack. I think MU's budget was around 10-12 compared to the SEC schools with MU's big12 budget. That budget immediately increased by $15-20million/year with the new conference revenue and increased donations. MU's budget will likely end up around 6-8 in the SEC when we are settled in.

Personally, we need to always make sure that we are in the top 7.
