I hope the contract provisions were Odom’s choice and not the AD’s.

Which provisions do you not like?

I'm not seeing anything outrageous in there. If anything, the buyout terms are favorable to us.

The incentives are all pretty run of the mill stuff.

It’s not that I don’t like them. It’s that I think the buyout clauses reduced his available choices. If Odom wanted to do that, that’s fine. He has to live with the results. If the Athletic Depart drew up the contract, I think it could hurt Odom’s chances of being successful and ultimately being retained.

Buyouts have historically been a weak point of athletic contracts at Mizzou.

Yeah. You’ve said that before.

Looks like it’s still true.
That’s regardless of it being BO’s idea, Sterk’s idea, or coming from the curators.

That’s not a weak buyout clause.

Unless a guy was simply dead set on leaving after 1 year then the buyout terms are hardly prohibitive.

Even if you left after 1 yr you owe the school 1.8M. Not going to stop many schools from hiring a guy they really wanted.

If a guy was insistent on leaving after 1 year then I'm not sure that's a good hire anyway.

Owing the remaining salary for the term of the contract if one voluntarily leaves is a pretty stron buyout. Not sure how you could negotiate a stronger one.

Yeah, that's what I said.

Would 1.8M have stopped Heupel from getting the UCF job? I kind of doubt it. 900k certainly would not have.

Why would we want anyone that was determined to leave after 1 year anyway?

Odom might have. He doesn’t have three years to retain his job.

Does Heupel take the job with this contract? Maybe.

It's possible, but I doubt he would have wanted anyone that made it clear they only wanted to be here for one year.

This is all assuming that this exact contract structure was discussed with other candidates which we don't know.

I would guess the template for the contract wasn’t created just for Dooley. But you’re right we don’t know that. It does match up with the info shared the other day that some candidates weren’t interested based on contract terms.

Posted this a few days ago @PowerMizzoucom but it’s now official former #Mizzou offensive analyst Jon Cooper will be the tight ends coach at UCF

Good for JJ. He needs a couple more years. He has a great teacher with Heup.
