I keep seeing people referring to Mizzou winning the east with 0 wins over teams with a winning conference record... so I did a little checking.

Here are the last few years with each division winner and the number of teams with a winning conference record they beat that season.

It turns out that teams that beat other teams to win the division rarely beat other teams with winning records in the conference...

2014:
East: Mizzou: 0
West: Alabama: 1 (Miss St)

2013:
East: Mizzou: 1 (Georgia)
West: Auburn: 2 (Ala, Georgia)

2012:
East: Georgia: 2 (FL, Vandy)
West: Alabama: 1 (LSU)

2011:
East: Georgia: 0
West: LSU: 2 (Ala, Ark)

2010:
East: S. Car: 1 (Ala)
West: Auburn: 4 (Ark, LSU, Ala, SCar)

2009:
East: Florida: 1 (LSU)
West: Alabama: 1 (LSU)

Its the same with the "East is down" in reference to last year when in fact the East was in one of its top 6-8 seasons as far a strength.

I just laugh at this point when they bring a lot of this stuff up.

I just went on the Bama board and they're shredding us of course. They said next year the east won't be down like it is now, we heard that last year. lol

I did some research last year when the "East is down" narrative starting becoming prevalent just as Mizzou was icing the division against aTm.

quote:

Lets look at the facts:

SEC East ranked teams per year:

1992: 8,10,12
1993: 5,12
1994: 7,22
1995: 2,3
1996: 1,9
1997: 4,10,7
1998: 1,5,14
1999: 12,9,16
2000: 10,19,20
2001: 4,3,13,22
2002: 3
2003: 7,15,24
2004: 13,7
2005: 10,12
2006: 1,25,23
2007: 2,12,13
2008: 1,13
2009: 3
2010: 22
2011: 9,19
2012: 5,9,8,23
2013: 5,4,24

Its funny. One of the top 10% East seasons in history. Only 4th time and first time in over 10 years the east finished with two top 5 teams

They're full of it, lets keep winning and see how far these pricks go with the excuses.

The reason most SEC fans think the East is down is due to the lack of a single dominate team. Florida was a yearly competitor for the national title throughout the '90's and 00's, until Meyer left. Tennessee was also competing for NC's throughout much of that time. Georgia had some very good teams, but along with Kentucky and Vandy, they're about the same as they have been. I do think South Carolina has really improved in recent years, although much of that is because they were overrated throughout much of the past 15 years. And you can't count Missouri, because you weren't around.

There were several years when the pride of the SEC was Florida, Tennessee and/or Georgia in the East, but we haven't seen that since 2008. Missouri is helping to restore the balance, but I don't think you'll see SEC fans credit the East for being strong again until someone steps up to replace Florida or Tennessee.
