You can play stats or you can take the eye test. He fricked up when we needed some buckets. When we needed upperclassmen leadership, he looked like another freshman out there. I know you have to contractually argue with me, so you do you.

Phillips was playing when Mizzou went on its run in the first half. Harris was in when kU did most of their run in the second half.
kansas also has the best backcourt Mizzou will face all year. Phillips will be fine as a backup.

I didn't get to watch the first half, but the only things I remember him doing in the second half was 1 turnover and he did knockdown a 3.
Overall, his stat line looked pretty good.
I can definitely see why Harris is starting though. He's bigger and way more athletic. Huge ceiling with this kid.
I have a feeling that come tournament time we are going to have a team that NOBODY is going to be excited about playing.

Yes Harris a better PG. Robertson might be as well, but he’s better used off the ball for most of the game.
Phillips is too small to be a good defensive player, but the offense was pretty efficient when Phillips was in the game.

I like Phillips. He's solid if not spectacular. On a good team, he's the backup PG and a pretty good one.
He's not a guy that I worry too much about accepting a role. He's a good Tiger, and with as much losing as he's done here I'd imagine he'll be happy helping the team win in the role he is asked to play.

Yea Phillips isn’t going to win you many games. The last 2 years is evidence. What he can do is get other players the ball in a position to score. Now that he has talent around him that’s what he will do.

Honestly, I really like the way all the roles are shaping up for just playing one exhibition game. Robertson looks like exactly what we needed. He's a more complete player than I thought. Barnett looks like he can truly flourish being a second option, and like I said I think Phillips is going to slot in nicely behind Harris.
The one guy who seems a bit lost is Puryear. He's a good complimentary piece IMO, but he's just such a tweener with his size. I don't really think he has the ball skills to play much on the perimeter and he has a really difficult time playing down low against teams with length. They said he dropped some weight, some Im guessing the plan is to use him more on the wing. I'll be interested to see where his season ends up.

I think they played well for the 1st time out. A couple of observations....MPJ needs to add some strength, especially if he’s a 1 and done. When he drove to the basket, a lot of ticky tack fouls that won’t be called at this level seemed to mess him up some. He needs to be able to go in strong and throw it down.
Puryear needs to stay outside on offense. He just can’t jump, and he gets stuffed when he goes inside. Let him bang if he will on the defensive end. He is strong enough to do that.
Defense I’m sure will be a focus in practice. The chicken hawks scored too many easy buckets by going inside out. We really need to adopt some more of that philosophy. Throw the ball into the post. When the defense collapses, kick it out for an open 3. I’m tired of the outside weave where nothing ever happens.

I think Puryear will end up being ok. He looked like he was trying too hard. He had 3-4 drives where he beat his man, got in the lane and took a contested shot over taller defenders. If he passes out to the open shooter on those types of drives as the season goes on, he will accumulate 2-3 assists a game.
I will also bet that Mizzou plays plenty of zone this year, so his athleticism/height will be ok defensively. I think he will average close to 8&5 this year in about 20 minutes.

The purpose of the weave is to force team to switch, then take advantage of the mismatches. That worked against kU.

Cuonzo put many of the Udoka baskets on himself. Post defense hasn’t been an emphasis yet.
The coaches also agreed to not play zone in the scrimmage. By January I think we can expect Mizzou to be solid defensively.

kU weaved us to death.
Of course, Cuonzo was not able to counter that with a zone because it wasn't allowed.
It's effective. kU was just better at it because their guards are quicker. We can also use it to get MPJ on a smaller defender he can shoot over or a bigger guy that he can go right around.
