As a linguist of sorts, I just recalled that the name ending "Witz" means "joke" in German (from middle high German, if I recall.) Could also mean "Wit." That makes it more hopeful.

But who's superstitious, eh?

EDIT: Unsure, I did some checking. In the Slavic names (Polish, f'rinstance), "Witz" can be "son of."

Witz has long been an eastern European patronymic.
