We’ll just agree you’ve never decided compensation for anyone.

No one has beat the drum that BO is going to stay here for the rest of his career.
Pay him an appropriate salary, give him money for good assistants. Or he will go somewhere that does. It’s the same for any coach. And really the same for anyone in any job. The best businesses take care of their employees. Pretty simple.
Sterk will take care of BO. And if he fails in a couple of years Mizzou will move on. If he keeps winning then he will continue to get paid more with future extensions.

Lowest=low
You love to argue almost as much as I do!
On the contrary though, I do decide compensation (at least in part) for now 20 salespeople. I also realize that my comp plan must be competitive or I run the risk of losing my best talent to a competitor.

Yeah they have.

I asked earlier. I’ll ask again. Name coaches who are paid more than $3.5M who you’re sure Barry is a better coach than.
The fact no one has taken a swing at that makes me think $3.5M is obviously too high. He has far less head coaching experience than the vast majority of the coaches ahead of him in compensation. He also has far less success.
As for the best businesses, business which are losing money have to be careful about compensation. And they can’t compare themselves to companies with 30% more revenue and profit.

Relatively low and lowest sure. Low and lowest are not the same. For instance, I hired a rep that I paid $15k lower than the market for his base salary a few months ago. He isn’t under compensated because he had no direct experience with his job. He’ll hit me up for a raise in a year when he’s proved his worth. And then we’ll discuss where he is versus the market, his individual performance and his line’s revenue and profit margins.

I would bet what I think BO should get paid on this extension is fairly similar to what you think he should get paid.
I just find it amusing that fans are getting worked up over his agent doing what an agent should do.

Of course, and if he has an offer from another company (and you deem him valuable) you’ll do your best to put together a compensation package that will keep him.
Posted on 11/25/18 at 7:50 pm to JesusQuintana
Yeah. If it’s a serious offer. His wife calls me and tells me he’s going to move to Louisville and I’ll wish them luck.
Posted on 11/25/18 at 7:55 pm to the808bass
yeah comparing anything we do in football to Ol Piss is reasonably stupid.
Posted on 11/25/18 at 8:15 pm to the808bass
Lol, I guess that depends on his performance.
I think we both agree he’s earned an extension. We may disagree on the dollar figure but I have full confidence they will come to an amicable agreement.

Bottom line is he will get some sort of a raise. Personally, I just hope it's not taking us to the $3.5m range quite yet (at least before incentives). If Sterk does, then he does. If Sterk doesn't and BO decides to leave, so be it.
I recognize the job BO has done. I also recognize that BO has a lot of growing to still do as a HC. If it's me, I give him a slight bump in guaranteed money, increase the assistant pool, increase the incentives. He's done enough to earn a slight bump. He hasn't done enough that I break the bank for him.
And 808, I'm with ya. Being a Mizzou alum and being Mizzou Made/True Son just went out the door.
BTW - We'll be having this same discussion a year from now.

Let’s hope somebody tries to hire him every offseason. That means he’s doing a great job.
3.5M is not breaking the bank though. It’s decidedly average compensation in this league. Below really. That would make him the 9th highest paid coach in the league. It would put him just inside the top 30 nationally. It’s fair compensation.
I get a lot of you still don’t like him, or are not “sold” or whatever the case may be but this is the price of poker currently. That’s just the way it is. It seems like a lot because his compensation is so low currently, but it’s not. He’s not getting fired. He’s done a good job. The last thing we need is having below lateral move jobs hiring our coach because we can’t/won’t pay market value. That’s a bad look.

I'm sure they will. Flirting back is a different story.

The bank was already broken last year but I get what you're saying. I personally just would bump him but just not 150%. Where do you go next year if he wins 8 games? $4m? He better be giving me something I really don't think I can get elsewhere once we start getting to those numbers.

I have no issue with paying for success. He brought a little bit of success and he deserves a little bit of recognition for that. Arky and UT's mistakes wouldn't influence how much that recognition is or should be. Bottom line is, BO is a 3rd year coach who is barely .500, though trending in the right direction. So he deserves some bump. And it's not like I would scream and shout if Sterk takes him to $3.5m. I just wouldn't. I have no problem increasing incentives but I don't think that is what he is looking for.

3 mil per till 2023, 1 mil buyout per year.
That's more than fair for a guy who blew 2 games and won 8.

I think something like this is fair, and reflects the current market for coaching salaries and buyouts.
5/6 years 3.5M plus incentives that could add another 250k. 50% guaranteed, pro rated. 300k increase to asst pool

He's not getting a 1 million dollar raise for going 8-4 (4-4) and finishing 5th in his division.
He had a shot at that and they went down with USC/UK.

The amount of the raise is irrelevant. It’s market value. A little below in fact.
Posted on 11/25/18 at 10:10 pm to JesusQuintana
It kind of is relevant. The more he is paid, the more the expectations are that the goal isn't just getting bowl eligible. As long is the goal is higher than that, then I have no problem paying more.

Getting reports that someone wants to hire him every year (à la Suitcase Mike) and actually having someone wanting to hire you every year are different things.

He hasn’t performed like a top 30 coach. When he does that, he should get top 30 money.
