Nah, it's this guys modified 3-4 defense that plays like a 5-2. I don't really understand it, because I can't find hardly any reading about it.
He has however placed 3 teams at Cal in the nations top 25 defense, and 1 in 1 year at USC.

Must be a 3-4 with two walked up OLBs where the MLB can shift to the strong side and the backside OLB can step back for backside contain
The base set would look like a 5-2 but with the "DE" standing up and backed off a little bit

Not really. You have your 4 basic linemen, but they shift so that one tackle goes over the center to become a nose tackle. One of the ends splits wide, but it is the strong safety that comes up to become the 5th guy that is opposite the end that has split out. You can do a lot of fancy stuff out of that alignment. The offense has to account for the safety that is in close striking distance of the QB. If the safety does come, the end on that side may drop into short coverage because the QB thinks his play is a quick slant in the spot vacated by the SS.

Yeah I haven't been able to find much on it, but one of the things the USC players talked about in the article was that they really got after the QB and tried to confuse him.
At the same time, they said it was a pretty easy system to understand, much easier than the Tampa 2 and Monte Kiffin before him.

Have to think that fits well for us, can you imagine Gray and/or Peters playing that SS role? My only concern is having DE's to cover shallow, not sure we have 2 with that athleticism right now.

So the best way to describe what I'm seeing is that it is like a permanent Nickle defense.
The line does slide over like Allyn talks about, but there are still two safeties deep. The "rover" or whatever he is going to call it, is a player like a Peters/Gray/Wells type player, bigger, but still very fast.
A lot of linemen standing up and moving around. That rover blitzes often and on stunts the inside OL never sees him coming until he's beside or around him.
Needless to say, I'm liking this a ton.

Joe Lee took chances on every play. When you have corners that can cover, it is good. When your corners cannot keep up, you look bad.

For sure, just commenting on the "hybrid" position, do not want a blitz every play defense. Without Smoot and Bean Dunn's D was not so good.
