https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-ncaa-to-levy-significant-penalties-on-florida-state-for-nil-recruiting-violations-002044221.html
quote:

Thirty months into the era of name, image and likeness, the NCAA is finally dropping the hammer.

The association is expected to levy significant penalties on Florida State, one of its NIL collectives and a booster, as well as an assistant coach, for NIL-related recruiting violations in the most serious and unprecedented sanctions handed down in the first two-and-a-half years of NIL. Multiple sources with knowledge of the decision and penalties spoke to Yahoo Sports under condition of anonymity.

The sanctions, wide-ranging and broad, are tied to a Spring 2022 recruiting event and are part of a resolution negotiated between the school and the NCAA.

A Florida State assistant coach, offensive coordinator Alex Atkins, is found to have committed two Level II violations, which include impermissible recruiting activity and facilitating impermissible contact with an NIL-related booster. Atkins is alleged to have driven a prospect and his parents to a meeting with a leading member of the school’s NIL collective, Rising Spear.

As part of the penalties, Atkins will be suspended the first three games of the 2024 regular season and is given a two-year show-cause. A show-cause requires schools who hire Atkins to explain the decision to NCAA officials. Atkins is expected to remain on FSU’s staff in his current role.

In a first of its kind in the NIL era, the school must disassociate with the NIL collective representative for a term of three years. The school also must disassociate from the NIL collective for one year as well. As part of the dissociation, FSU cannot accept assistance from the collective and the collective cannot contribute to the athletic program in any way. However, the collective is free to continue working with FSU athletes on NIL endeavors.

Other penalties include:

- two years of probation.

- scholarship reductions of five over the next two academic years.

- a reduction by seven in official visits for 2023-24.

- a prohibition on recruiting communication for six weeks over the next two academic years, including this next week (Jan. 12-18).

- a prohibition on communication with athletes in the transfer portal from April 15-21.

- a reduction by 18 evaluation days this spring.

- a financial penalty of 1% of the athletic department’s budget.

The NCAA’s rules around NIL are murky. The association only has an interim NIL policy that provides guidance to programs — a policy that is under continuous change in this ever-evolving landscape of athlete compensation.

In fact, the organization adopted new guidance just this week around NIL, but those changes are not retroactively applied. The organization also adopted new recommendations on Thursday that permit schools to have more communication and contact with collectives.

The NCAA sanctions are the latest issue in which FSU is thrust into the news cycle.

The Seminoles became the first undefeated Power Five champion to be left out of the College Football Playoff this past season, a move that ignited backlash from Florida politicians and legal challenges. Two weeks after the CFP’s decision, FSU filed a lawsuit challenging the ACC’s grant of rights in its first significant step to leave the conference.

Meanwhile, the program’s coach, Mike Norvell, is one of a small group of coaches believed to be a serious candidate for Alabama’s coaching search. How the NCAA’s investigation of Florida State impacts Norvell’s candidacy is unclear. He is not expected to receive any individual sanctions.

Florida State officials declined comment when reached Thursday. From the NCAA convention in Phoenix, NCAA officials declined comment as well. However, leaders of the NCAA’s enforcement staff addressed general NIL-related rules violations during a session Thursday morning from the convention.

Mark Hicks, the NCAA enforcement managing director for development, told a group of administrators that the association is focused on “tampering and inducements” related to NIL and that they have proof that recruiting rules are being violated. The NCAA has screenshots of text messages from sitting head coaches sent directly to players competing on other college teams in attempts to get them to transfer schools.

Coaches are, as well, reaching out to the high school coaches of college players as intermediaries, said Hicks. College coaches are messaging high school coaches, “If you go to Johnny and ask him to get in the portal, we’d be interested in him!”

Athletes are doing it as well.

“There are student-athletes reaching out to coaches, ‘I’m thinking about going into the portal. Would you be interested?’” Hicks said.

NCAA officials are learning of new ways that universities are inducing athletes to their campus, said Hicks, including offering a combination of cash, an apartment lease, a vehicle and transportation for family members to visit campus.

However, many in college athletics have been frustrated with the lack of infractions cases related to NIL violations. This is the second NIL-adjacent infractions case. Last spring, the NCAA hit Miami with mostly minor sanctions related to a booster hosting prospects at his home.

More cases are not pursued because of a lack of evidence, NCAA leaders have often cited.

ESPN owned Disney is losing its own self governing water management district thanks to our governor… also ESPN wants to keep bama and uga as it’s premier brands. Bama is special and uga is Atlanta. With Texas coming they got what they want. No use For a perstering nuisance a little too good for it’s own good that brings a state legislature and AG office with it. They like UF being only team in state getting that big arse tv money cause they know they’ll blow it on stadium renovations and other non football BS

Dude, I know going full tinfoil is your gig and that is OK but I was around back when Free Shoes would have been in the SEC except Bowden was a pussy.

This is not just Florida, it is the country.

If we get a repeat of what happened over a century ago when all this happened, within a generation it will all blow up is the $$$$ driven MBA's faces. If not it will become NFL Lite and no real connection to schools or fans.

The more you think things change, the more you learn they stay the same

Free Shoes U back then
Cheaters but everybody looked the other way
Played lame schedule to get to the Natty

MeatChicken now
Cheaters but everybody looked the other way
Played lame schedule to get to the Natty

At my age, the issue is getting the YoungBloods to listen to the history so they do not have to live through the repeat and can fix it.

I don’t get what Michigan has to do with fsu trying to join the sec in 2025 because the ACC is dying and Bama and Georgia not letting them in

Less tinfoil and more reality dude

B1G envies the SEC, this whole CFP with a "committee" to allow substandard B1G a spot is just the latest incarceration of the B1G trying to cripple the SEC. This stuff has been going on since at least the 1950's after Beyers took control of the NCAA after World War 2.

You want to play checkers with Free Shoes, wake up to the chess game with CFB.

reality is this I give a shite about Florida and not the sec.

The bcs era and 4 team playoff is over. No need to worry about conference supremacy much anymore as if you are a top team u will get a shot in theb12 team playoffs. If we have 3 losses and get picked at 13 while Penn State or Maryland gets in with 3 losses at 12 we have no argument because realistically a 12 seed isn’t winning shite. Elite teams will win regardless of the media narrative. Right now we aren’t playing checkers or chess at Florida we aren’t even in the game. I don’t give a frick about the sec vs big 10 when Florida is in the shitter because of the uaa.

Clearly you do not remember Gator football till Pell arrived.

What has made ANY historical SEC school good it the disrespect (and collective chip on our shoulders) that it was "us against them". Lose sight of this at your own peril and the future of any Gator sports teams long term sustained success. The state of Florida benefited (UF + FSU + UM) from the Cocaine Cowboys of the 70's and 80's that had the Federal Reserve Bank handling Florida see a cash flow 4 times greater than the next Federal Reserve Bank in the USA for a decade or so.

Those cocaine $$$$ are dead as disco and the state has become a haven for retired Canadians and Euro trash. We it stops being about "us" and all about "me" you have already lost.

u do realize that the fans of Florida have already lost and the uaa won

it’s over already for Florida as a program so all the us vs them stuff is meaningless because the uaa has killed this program and not coming back in our lifetimes

You are too focused on that pesky tree when there is a whole forrest to see.

Folks come and go, and long term strategic view is what keeps you at the table.

the whole conference pride “is vs them” mentality just has us seeing Georgia get stronger while Stricklin and the uaa continue to drive all revenue sports into the ground further and further.

You are focusing on the short term. Living this long you learn it runs in cycles. The beauty of "The Six" in the SEC is steel sharpens steel. Most every other conference is just the same 1 or 2 teams after 100 years.

Gators are in a down cycle, and UGA is caring the East load now. Pretty sure this will not be the case in 5 to 10 years.

I know you do not probably believe this but if you make it to my age, you will.

The real rivalries now are uga and bama vs fsu. That’s the real iron bowl that’s the real cocktail party
Floridas rivals now on “and off” the field are Vanderbilt , Kentucky , South Carolina
Fsu has the rivalries it’s just a proxy war.
In someways being good fans has hurt us ppl still go to games and sell it out no matter what. It’s noble but it allows the uaa to carry on
Fsu fans stopped going and forced action .
All kinds of weather me that I don’t even care anymore #apathy

Best rivalry in the SEC is the Egg Bowl and I bet you have never been

SEC = "us" vs "them" - that is how steel sharpens steel
