This has been nagging me since the first UF game when I had a frank discussion with the director of player relations in a bar on Friday night. He had had a few and told me that there are a few schools in the SEC that were offering recruits considerable money to come to their schools. He said these kids come to UF for visits and ask, balls out, how much are they offering. According to him CDM will have none of it so it's not being done in Gainesville. So, how are we supposed to remain competitive when we will consistently fall behind in recruiting with the likes of, oh, say UGA and Bama?

Kevin Barbay (Same role under sharkfricker) told me that Auburn paid Naquin Craig Myers 80K.

Of course DM will have none of it. It's the job of the boosters and the support staff to act as go-betweens for players and the $$$$.

There needs to be a Bullgator and a checkbook in the car waiting at the airport for every OV.

If we were playing the same game as Bama, UGA, etc, we'd hire 20 sorority girls to act as recruiting staff/tour guides that would Snap and text players during the season, then hand out business cards on visits. They would all be set up conveniently with internships at booster owned businesses over the summer/after graduation.

It should not be a booster or bullgator. Those are official ties to a university.

Edit: Watch the Wire. Recruiting = Drug Dealing

I actually read one time that this tactic actually started at UF under Pell. The girls were called Gator Getters

You're dreaming if you think the coaches are kept out of this. They are knee deep in it. How else can they explain to parents on their sofas how UF is the right place for their son when Mama is asking how much they are coming in at compared to....

I'm not talking about involvement, I'm talking about exposure.

If head coach visits Prospect #1 at 800pm, Mr Smith who owns a local car dealership visits at 745pm with a catalog and the August mortgage payment.

The difference between the Saban/Kirby/Dabo way and everyone else (who is also doing this) is how much coordination exists between coaching staff and financiers versus "rogue boosters" freewheeling it, and, of course, how deep the pockets are.

Wrong, it was done as far back as Graves (HC from 1960-69)

They escorted recruits around campus.

On the subject of recruiting violations, none of you probably remember the heartache of 1983-1986 when we were destroyed by the NCAA....thanks but no thanks.

Its a poor excuse that everyone else is doing it...just ask Spurrier what he thinks.

I used to work with a former SMU coach who was there during The Pony Express era. He said "I knew we were in trouble when coaches were walking to practice and players were coming up in new cars."

This is one of the reasons I wanted Kiffin. He would do anything to win and he knows Saban ways . We are going to have a hard time winning championships if we don’t start recruiting like Bama and Georgia.

Well it’s like I said guys. If I ever hit the powerball UF will never lose another game again. Even on probation we going 12-0 and I’m buying every one undefeated rings

Scheme and clear cut path to the NFL where they can really get the bags.

I've explained on another site and will take the time to do it here, too: Florida is too good at too many sports to risk recruiting the way Georgia and Alabama do. I think Stanford is the only team with more NCAA Championships but they pad their stats with sports that can't be offered by many Universities.

So the problem is that Alabama and Georgia are only good in four sports, we've won 9 different types of sports, and have been runner ups in a ton of others since 2005.

So, the gist of it is:

1. Get a guy who can recruit, develop and produce results at Quarterback.

2. Get a decent Blue Chip ratio.

3. Scheme.

I think we're doing that, now. Kirby had a 25 Blue Chip advantage on us this year and needed four quarters to put us away. When Florida has its Quarterback, I think we can keep it close enough to change the perceptions on NFL talent vs. bags.

Honestly, though, it looks like the NCAA is really taking its hands off the wheel but...

Look at all the teams who won Basketball Championships. I think we're literally the only ones who weren't caught with recruiting violations outside of like 135 dollars to a recruit accidentally or something along those lines.

I’m not advocating for paying recruits, I just hate the lack of parity. As Otis Yelvington told me “we’ve got the worst facilities in the south, and are not offering $$ to the recruits.” I get the whole we are Florida vibe, but to an 18 year old poor athlete who can’t see past tomorrow and wants what’s his, we will always loose out to the big boys.

There is a reason we fall behind to the Bama's and Georgia's.....its called facilities and we are very far behind. Its perplexing that we don't have the funds or cant allocate enough of it to football.

We spend an inordinate amount of the athletic departments funds on soccer, volleyball, softball, ladies basketball, ( I cant see how we haven't been successful in that sport for ages ) tennis, golf and badminton, lawn darts etc etc. How about some $$ for the real money generating sport?

When Charley Pell came to UF in 1979 he was appalled by the lack of facilities and most of the athletic areas looked like high school gyms and playgrounds. The head coach's office had some used furniture in it. Pell went out and started talking to high monied boosters about what was needed for UF to compete. UF had recently spent money on increasing the size of the stadium and now needed facilities upgraded. Pell did a lot to change UF's image and make teams weary of playing us. RIP.

There's no excuse for the facilities, and we're starting to catch up in that department -- I mean, when Jim McElwain is complaining about facilities after coming from Colorado State that's not a good sign. Hopefully Dan Mullen and Stricklin are getting some very fresh (youthful) takes on it. I believe they visited Clemson's facilities.

As well as Bama and TAMU.

Edit: The biggest issue was space. They threw money at the problem and moved an academic department to allow the new baseball stadium. Rip down the baseball stadium and football gets the best facilities in the nation.

for the insight. What I really am interested in is ...Is there ever going to come a time when those other schools have to answer for this egregious behavior or are we just too far gone? I’m an SEC fan all the way, but would love to see those schools mired in NCAA investigations with fired coaches and vacated titles/wins. Let’s level the playing field for heavens sake.
