I think the silence out of Columbia is very telling. If tanner didn't think he had an excellent shot at Herman this late in the game, then full panic mode would be on right now and there would be various rumors swirling around of whom we have contacted.
The fact that there is literally nothing coming out tells me either RT is a complete idiot and we are screwed, or there is something pretty solid in place that there is no need to discuss while Houston preps for a conference championship.
If in the next few days we start hearing of new contacts made for a potential hire then I will really start worrying.

Agree with you on how quiet it has become...and the same can be said out of the Herman camp as well.
It feels like both sides are intentionally "ignoring" each other.

I am shocked y'all got rid of Richt. I did not think your AD had the balls to do that. Do you agree with him also taking the Asst Coaches off the road for recruiting?

I'm a little shocked as well. I didn't think Ears had it in him to do it but he needs to be fired too. He is killing our athletic department and using it as a fundraiser for the school.
They pulled everyone but Brown and McClendon. I'm not sure if they pulled them because they are being fired or because there's nothing to sell at the moment.
I keep hearing/seeing that Pruitt is out and Muschamp is in at DC. Who knows though.

Isn't that the role of the athletic department?
As for the quiet talk out of Houston/Herman, it's probably because both sides moved on. There was a flurry of activity on Smart last week after it was reported that Herman wasn't interested anymore.
Now that Smart is likely off the table, I expect to see a bunch of rumors around the program this week, as far as contacting random candidates and seeing about interest.
If Tanner has been down this road before, I'd have more confidence that this hasn't blown up completely in his face. But this is his first big rodeo, and he really doesn't have a great playbook. I wish like hell that he'll prove us all wrong and unveil a top-flight coach that gets everyone excited about the program again. But I have to temper myself from expecting too much out of him right now.

Then why fire Richt? He brings in tons of money and he's a great PR guy.

There's a report out that we interviewed Chad Morris.
quote:
Nonetheless, South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner flew to Dallas, Texas on November 22 to meet with the young coach.
Tanner and several other representatives of the school met Morris in the conference room of the General Aviation terminal at Love Field. The meeting lasted roughly an hour, we’re told.
Tanner and his entourage reportedly took a chartered flight in order to throw those tracking the University’s two public planes.
I hadn't heard this anywhere...maybe it's in this thread somewhere and I missed it, though.
I have no idea how credible this site is at all. Not one I'm familiar with.

Dunno. I think y'all made a mistake. But not my circus, not my monkeys.

FitsNews is pretty credible. IIRC, they broke the Sanford/mistress story. He's connected as far as local/state politics.
If he says that Tanner interviewed Morris, I think it's pretty likely that it actually happened.

The almost-immediate response out of Houston that Herman had withdrawn his name from consideration held the typical characteristics of a purely strategic move to throw off the media.
Tanner's response to the report last week was the first public statement he's made about a particular candidate. It was also the first time Herman addressed a particular school who had been pursuing him. The way Tanner quickly tried to suppress the rumors told me that they were actually true, and he was trying to protect a sensitive situation. We've probably already discussed that in this thread.
For Herman to say that he was withdrawing his name from consideration, it would eliminate speculation that he was for sure leaving Houston, and it would put his players at ease. He hasn't addressed another rumor tying his name to a particular job since then.
You're probably right that both sides have moved on. I'm certainly not holding out hope for Herman to still come here, but the way the PR aspect was handled just reminded me of what I've seen through my own professional experience: When a report comes out that could threaten a business deal, you release a counter-report (typically a complete 180) through a closely-connected pipeline, or another "source," to help quell the flames of exposure and speculation. By then, no one will know what is true, and will stop talking about it until something solid surfaces or is released.

What are your thoughts on this?
Morris has tanked pretty badly at SMU...maybe it's just bc it was a poor fit to begin with, maybe it's another case of an assistant not being able to cut it as a HC. The angle of hiring him and the taters' heads exploding bc of it is appealing, though.

I know someone who works and writes articles for Fits. I shot her a text, but haven't gotten a response yet. What are people's thoughts on Chad?

Not a fan of Morris as a candidate. I would say his tanking at SMU deals directly with the fact that above anyone else SMU isn't able to pay players like clemson does. So he had to step down a level in talent.

His team was competitive in a few of their games. SMU may honestly be one of the worst jobs in the country. You kinda have to grade Morris on a curve.
That said, he's extremely green, like Herman, but without Herman's success. The best things Morris has going for him is that he knows the Carolinas well. That's a big plus.
I'd like to think that there are better candidates available who want the job, but Morris may honestly be one of the better names out there who has expressed interest.
My biggest reservation to him is that, when our defense was competent, it shut his scheme down cold- and he had a lot of talent to run it. But he did have success against every other SEC team he played- UGa, Aubie, LSU.

I think we could do much worse than morris. He is a strong recruiter and his offense has had success. I think that with a strong defensive coordinator Morris could do well at USC.
Hard to judge him as a coach based on this year at smu. Their schedule was fairly brutal and smu is not stocked with talent.

Going be the craziest week yet as the coaching carousel spins out of control. BTW, I still think Herman is in play for South Carolina.

There is obviously nothing to talk about in football right now....
These guys need to get a job, the one they are doing isn't their first calling.

Will Folks is a prick, I personally detest his bullshite, but occasionally he does have his contacts. He's not a good person IMHO ... but neither is Nancy (Mace), his partner. Although I heard she sold off her share of the site (FitNews).
I knew about the flight ... didn't know about him meeting with Morris. I think a lot of us were misdirected and were under the assumption that he met with Bob Beaudine on that trip evidently.
Chad Morris would not be a bad hire. Even though he has had a rough season at SMU ... everyone agrees they played well above their talent level and are headed in the right direction under Morris ... even though Memphis bent them over this past Saturday. That was the result of a lot of injuries, a depleted and worn-out squad that Morris inherited.
I have always thought that one day Morris would end-up back at A&M and make them a very very dangerous football program.
In full disclosure about Will Folks ... I've had a personal run-in with him when he was working for Governor Sanford. He's a scum bag.
You mentioned the LoveGov affair .. but don't forget, he also claimed a personal affair with Nikki Haley.

I think it's a Phil Kornblut conspiracy. He doesn't want to stand alone in the "big mouth that ruins shite for SC" category.

Ahhh yeah! I had forgotten about that.
I had some personal contacts that 100% confirmed the Haley/infidelity stories. Even told me exactly where one hookup happened.
Btw, TBS now reporting that yes, Virginia, Herman is no longer interested.
Why no word about Jeff Brohm at WKU? Hell, if he'll take it, offer Lincoln Riley.
